Athletes from Augusta University showcase their talent in an exciting track and field competition.
The city of Augusta recently honored the outstanding performances of athletes from Augusta University’s women’s track and field team. Senior Emily McBride earned the title of Track Athlete of the Week, while freshman Nene Akaose was recognized as Field Athlete of the Week. The athletes showcased their skills at the Georgia Tech Invitational, where impressive performances included standout runs and teamwork in relay events. As the team prepares for the upcoming Peach Belt Conference Championships, enthusiasm and support for Augusta’s remarkable athletes continue to grow.
Excitement was in the air as the city of Augusta recently celebrated the remarkable achievements of two standout athletes from Augusta University’s women’s track and field team. Senior Emily McBride from Peachtree City, Georgia, has been honored as the Track Athlete of the Week, and freshman sensation Nene Akaose, hailing from Augusta, has snagged the title of Field Athlete of the Week.
The recognition comes on the heels of an intense performance by the team at the Georgia Tech Invitational. This major event saw fierce competition from athletes hailing from various NCAA divisions, pushing everyone to bring their A-game. It was a chance for Augusta’s athletes to showcase their hard work and dedication in front of a large crowd.
One of the highlights of the meet was the incredible run by sophomore Josalyn Branch, who competed in the 100-meter dash. She sprinted her way to the finish line with an impressive time of 12.25 seconds. The competition was tough, but Josalyn’s determination shone through as she left her mark on the track.
Another exciting moment came from Augusta’s 4×100-meter relay team, featuring Nene Akaose, Madison Mitchell, Madison Mills, and Josalyn Branch. While the team finished in 21st place with a time of 48.17 seconds, their teamwork and effort were truly commendable. Team relays often bring a unique blend of speed and strategy, and Augusta’s runners did their best against some stiff competition.
The distance events also showcased Augusta’s capabilities, with junior Grace Gyetko leading the charge in the 800 meters. Grace clocked in at 2:23.83, demonstrating her strength over the middle distance. Not stopping there, she also competed in the 1500 meters, finishing with a solid time of 4:59.84. Meanwhile, freshman Sophia Cook had a stellar performance in the same event, crossing the finish line in 4:51.24, showing great promise for the future.
Sophomore Maria Biondollilo also represented Augusta in the grueling 5000 meters event, where she placed 31st with a time of 18:40.89. Her resilience in such a demanding race speaks volumes about her dedication to the sport.
Of course, we cannot forget to mention Nene Akaose’s impressive showcasing in the long jump. Nene managed to achieve a mark of 5.12 meters (or about 16 feet 9.75 inches), which contributed to her recognition as the top Field Athlete of the Week. Her performance truly highlights her potential as one of Augusta’s rising stars.
As the team wrapped up their regular season with this event, the excitement doesn’t stop there. The Peach Belt Conference Championships are just around the corner, scheduled for April 28–29 in sunny Daytona Beach, Florida. This upcoming championship is the moment all the hard work and training will really pay off, and fans are eager to see how their athletes will perform on this bigger stage.
