A rural community in Georgia experiencing a housing development boom.
Governor Brian P. Kemp has announced an $11 million funding boost for the Rural Workforce Housing Initiative in Georgia. This initiative aims to develop 542 housing units across five communities—Cairo, Hagan, Douglas, Augusta, and Swainsboro. The grant allocations will improve essential infrastructure and support the construction of new homes to meet the growing demand. This initiative underscores the state’s commitment to fostering economic development and providing affordable housing for its residents.
Georgians, get ready to celebrate! With an astounding $11 million awarded to support housing development, we are about to see some real changes in our rural communities. Recently, Governor Brian P. Kemp made a thrilling announcement regarding the Rural Workforce Housing Initiative, which aims to provide essential infrastructure to accommodate the surging population in our beloved state.
The initiative is all about creating more housing units as Georgia experiences a rapid wave of growth. This funding will support the construction of a total of 542 housing units across five different communities, namely Cairo, Hagan, Douglas, Augusta, and Swainsboro. Exciting, isn’t it?
The grant recipients have really stepped up to the plate, showcasing strong collaboration with local real estate developers. This teamwork is essential because these communities need more homes for their workforce to accommodate the growing demand. So it’s not just about funding; it’s about making a commitment to boosting the local economy!
This round of grants is an extension of an ongoing effort that was first introduced during the Governor’s 2023 State of the State Address. The Georgia General Assembly initially approved $35.7 million to kick-start this initiative in the Amended Fiscal Year 2023 budget. Following this, an additional $50 million was allocated for Fiscal Year 2024 and another $6 million for Fiscal Year 2025, along with $28 million in the Amended Fiscal Year 2024. It’s clear that this initiative is receiving strong support!
The city has been awarded $2.5 million in OneGeorgia funds. This money will be used for necessary road, water, and sewer improvements to help construct 180 new single-family homes on a sprawling 45 acres. The project will start with a phased construction of 60 homes, and Cairo is putting in an additional $227,078 to support the initiative.
Hagan is joining the party with a grant of $1,074,711 for improving the street, drainage, water, and sewer systems. This project will pave the way for 29 single-family homes on six acres, with the city contributing $62,241.
They received $2.5 million to enhance infrastructure for 67 new housing units across 36 acres. The first phase will include 40 single-family homes, with further contributions from the Industrial Authority of $83,750 and the city of Douglas at $288,813.
This Authority sought $2.5 million for making improvements to roads and utilities in order to develop 55 new single-family homes on 11.5 acres. There are even plans for future phases that would add another 104 units and some commercial developments! Augusta Utilities is helping out with a $110,000 contribution.
Lastly, Swainsboro has secured $2.5 million for infrastructure improvements in the Rolling Oaks Subdivision spanning 23 acres. Initially, 24 housing units will be constructed, eventually expanding to accommodate a total of 47 homes. The city is chipping in with $102,000, alongside additional funds from the developer.
It’s clear that these funds will be put to good use, creating new homes and opportunities for many residents. As developers and local governments continue to collaborate, we can expect to see progress within the next two years. This initiative highlights Georgia’s commitment to supporting its growing communities and ensuring that everyone has access to affordable living. Here’s to a promising future for our state!
