Augusta officials apprehended James Jackson, a 58-year-old fugitive, following a standoff on Clark Street that involved tear gas deployment by SWAT. Jackson, wanted for federal probation violations related to narcotics and weapon charges, was arrested shortly after the operation began. Along with him, Monica Rihm was also taken into custody. This marks the fourth armed standoff in Augusta within three weeks, escalating community safety concerns amidst a backdrop of violent encounters.
Augusta officials apprehended fugitive James Jackson, 58, on Tuesday morning after a standoff at a residence on the 2000 block of Clark Street. The incident began around 7 a.m. and involved the deployment of tear gas by a Richmond County SWAT team around 8 a.m., leading to Jackson’s arrest minutes later. He had been wanted for federal probation violations pertaining to multiple charges related to narcotics and weapons possession.
Alongside Jackson, Monica Rihm, 40, was also taken into custody due to a probation violation connected to narcotics charges. This incident marks the fourth armed standoff in Augusta in just three weeks, further heightening community concerns regarding public safety.
Jackson’s history with law enforcement includes a documented pattern of resisting arrest and fleeing. His capture comes amidst a particularly violent period for the Augusta community, which saw back-to-back tense encounters involving individuals barricading themselves from the police.
On April 26, a tragic standoff resulted in the death of Deputy Brandon Sikes, and left Deputy Gavin White critically injured when they confronted James Blake Montgomery. Montgomery was discovered in a motorhome filled with explosives. Just days earlier, on April 24, Terrell Crawford surrendered peacefully after being wanted for multiple criminal charges and a probation violation.
Another incident on April 13 involved Dwayne Eduh, 24, who took his own life during a standoff while being sought in connection with two fatal shootings. The frequency of these standoffs has left residents feeling “shocked and scared,” disrupting the otherwise peaceful atmosphere of their neighborhoods.
The latest standoff occurred on Tuesday afternoon in South Augusta, where Mason Meeks, 33, barricaded himself inside a home after being approached by law enforcement. Meeks, who possessed a handgun, caused significant concern. Richmond County SWAT was summoned to the scene, while two women inside the residence were safely evacuated by 3:37 p.m.
During this tense situation, negotiators tried to communicate with Meeks using a public address system. Eventually, at 3:47 p.m., a sheriff’s robot breached a side door, prompting Meeks to surrender at 3:58 p.m.
Meeks now faces five misdemeanor shoplifting charges as well as one felony shoplifting charge, with additional charges expected.
Amidst these events, a Georgia mother is advocating for changes in police pursuit policies after her son was killed by a fleeing suspect in Little Five Points.
