News Summary

Augusta University has introduced an online health appointment scheduling platform to enhance student healthcare services. This initiative allows students to easily schedule preventive and acute care appointments, improving access to essential health services. Notably, the platform enables flexible appointment booking, along with features like secure messaging and educational resources. The university is also expanding its research capabilities due to new funding, addressing broader public health challenges while promoting wellness and accessibility for students in the community.

Augusta, Georgia – Augusta University has taken significant steps forward in enhancing student healthcare services with the introduction of a new online health appointment scheduling platform. This innovative system allows students to easily book preventive and acute care appointments online, improving accessibility to essential health services.

The online scheduling platform covers a wide range of healthcare needs. Students can now arrange appointments for preventive care services such as pap exams, physical exams, and travel consults. Additionally, acute care appointments can be made for various symptoms, including urinary, respiratory, and gastrointestinal issues. This initiative aims to provide a more convenient and efficient way for students to manage their health care needs.

The director of Student Health Services highlighted that this new platform enhances access to both mental and physical healthcare for students. By offering a 24/7 scheduling option, the system is designed to reduce call wait times and increase convenience for students seeking medical assistance.

In addition, students are now able to book appointments flexibly, fitting them in between classes or after hours. The user-friendly platform includes features such as secure messaging, education resources, visit summaries, immunization records, and lab results, enabling students to take charge of their health information easily.

Student feedback on the new online system has been positive, emphasizing that it encourages those who may hesitate to seek medical help to utilize campus health services. Furthermore, Augusta University has implemented after-hours telehealth options through HealthiestYou, offering no consultation fees for students enrolled in Augusta University Student Health Insurance. Mental health resources are also available after hours through Uwill, ensuring support is accessible at all times for enrolled students.

In tandem with improving student health services, Augusta University is set to receive a substantial $99.8 million in state funding for the development of a new translational research building. This project, which totals $146.2 million, aims to create modern laboratory spaces equipped with advanced technology. The new facility will play a crucial role in attracting top-tier researchers and fostering an innovative research environment.

Securing this funding aligns with Augusta University’s goal of achieving R1 research university status. Presently, the university ranks 64th in National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding, reflecting its commitment to advancing research and academic excellence. The construction of the translational research facility will contribute significantly to the university’s expansion plans, aiming to add an additional 300,000 square feet of research space over the next decade.

Augusta University is also actively involved in community health initiatives, evidenced by the Healthy Grandparents Program, which focuses on supporting grandparents raising grandchildren in parent-absent homes. Recently, this program hosted a health fair that provided various screenings and health resources to the community.

Moreover, the Healthy Georgia report indicates that Georgia has the second-lowest rate of health insurance coverage among adults. Public health statistics show concerning trends, including higher rates of childhood asthma and adult obesity relative to national averages, highlighting the persistent health challenges faced by residents of the state.

In addition to these initiatives, Augusta University’s Dental College celebrated Children’s Dental Health Month with a special “Give Kids a Smile Day” event, aimed at promoting oral health among young children. The university also hosted a healthcare access event for bus drivers at Augusta University, providing essential health services to this vulnerable population while offering nursing students the opportunity to gain practical experience.

With these developments, Augusta University demonstrates its commitment to enhancing student health services and fostering research advancements while addressing public health challenges within the community.
