Augusta University will celebrate its graduating students with undergraduate and graduate commencement ceremonies on May 8 and 9 at the Augusta Marriott. The events will feature speakers, performers, and a reflection of academic journeys, marking a significant milestone for the Class of 2023.

Augusta, Georgia – Augusta University is set to host its undergraduate and graduate commencement ceremonies in May, marking a significant milestone for its graduating students. The ceremonies will take place on May 8 and May 9 at the Augusta Marriott at the Convention Center, with a series of speakers and performers scheduled to celebrate the achievements of the Class of 2023.

The Graduate Hooding and Commencement Ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, May 8, at 5 p.m. Steve Jones, a candidate for a Doctor of Education in Educational Innovation in the College of Education and Human Development, has been designated as the student speaker for this event. He will be accompanied by Madelyn Eden, who will perform Augusta University’s alma mater during the ceremony.

Following the Graduate Ceremony, there will be two Undergraduate Commencement Ceremonies held on Friday, May 9. The first ceremony will take place at 10 a.m., featuring Ta’zheara Butts as the student speaker and Beatrice Jackson as the student soloist. The second ceremony is set for 2 p.m., with Christina Waller serving as the student speaker and Beatrice Jackson returning for another performance.

Steve Jones brings with him a wealth of experience to the podium. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Albany State University and a master’s degree from Georgia College & State University. With 26 years in secondary education, Jones has served in various roles, including teacher and principal, within Bibb County, Georgia. His decision to pursue a doctorate at Augusta University was influenced by a friend’s encouragement, and he has dedicated his academic achievements to his late family members.

Ta’zheara Butts, set to graduate with a Bachelor of Social Work degree, has been an active participant in university organizations, including the Mu Zeta Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. In her commencement speech, she plans to share insights from her personal college journey and highlight themes of resilience. Upon graduation, Butts plans to continue her education at the University of Chicago, where she will pursue a master’s degree in social work with a specialization in child and family welfare.

Christina Waller, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, has displayed significant involvement on campus, holding leadership positions in multiple organizations. She is recognized as a recipient of the Ella Spring Jones Service Award for her community volunteering efforts. Waller intends to pursue her doctorate degree at Augusta University, aspiring to specialize in psychiatric mental health. Her speech will focus on inspiring her classmates to embrace courage and resilience as they move forward in their careers.

The commencement ceremonies not only symbolize the culmination of academic achievements but also offer students the opportunity to reflect on their journeys and aspirations. With a diverse lineup of speakers and performers, Augusta University’s commencement events promise to be a momentous occasion for graduates, their families, and friends.
