The ceremony attracted hundreds of visitors, primarily family members eager to support their loved ones as they transitioned into the next stage of their lives.
President Lester A. McCorn presided over the graduation ceremony, which saw a total of 35 candidates receive their degrees. Among the notable guests were Augusta Mayor Garnett Johnson and keynote speaker Senator Raphael Warnock, who delivered an inspiring message to the graduates.
In a special recognition during the ceremony, the class of 1975, known as the “Golden Age” Class, was celebrated for reaching the 50-year anniversary of their own graduation from Paine College. This acknowledgment added a layer of nostalgia and pride to the event, reinforcing the college’s commitment to honoring its history.
During his address, President McCorn highlighted important values such as preeminence, respect, integrity, dignity, and excellence. He emphasized the role of student leaders in fostering a sense of pride among their peers, reflecting the college’s mission to cultivate empowered and engaged citizens.
Senator Warnock, a distinguished alumnus of Morehouse College and a friend of McCorn, spoke with passion about the critical role of historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in shaping society. He encouraged students to persevere, sharing insights into the financial challenges many face in their educational journeys. Warnock’s personal story served as a beacon of inspiration, demonstrating the importance of resilience and determination.
Moreover, the senator advocated for increased investment in higher education, particularly for HBCUs, which hold substantial cultural and educational significance in the African American community. His message resonated deeply with the graduates, many of whom hold dreams of making impactful contributions to society.
The commencement ceremony coincided with Mother’s Day, a poignant addition to the day’s significance for many attendees, especially the mothers of graduates who were celebrated for their unwavering support throughout their children’s educational experiences.
Jessica Brown, the student president of Paine College, expressed her gratitude for the rich accomplishments of her peers and the collective pride felt during the ceremony. The sense of achievement was palpable among the graduates, who reported feelings of ecstasy and fulfillment as they completed this pivotal chapter in their academic careers.
