The city’s Board of Zoning Appeals granted a variance to the developer on May 6, 2023, allowing for the establishment of the coffee shop at Edgewood Square. This new Dutch Bros. Coffee shop will serve as the Central Savannah River Area’s (CSRA) inaugural location for the brand, enhancing the local coffee scene.
The project is being developed by Charlotte-based Durban Development, which has secured an outparcel of approximately one acre of vacant land located behind Sparkle Express Car Wash. Edgewood Square, where the coffee shop will be built, is situated near Hobby Lobby and is set to see new stores, including Five Below and Burlington, opening in the shopping center by the first quarter of 2026.
The project manager for Durban Development, Stephen Knudsen, confirmed that the Dutch Bros. Coffee location is still in the design phase. Dutch Bros. Coffee locations typically feature drive-thru and walk-up services, similar to the operational style of other emerging coffee chains like 7 Brew.
Founded in 1992 as a pushcart business in Grants Pass, Oregon, Dutch Bros. Coffee has rapidly expanded since its inception. The company has made its mark in the Northwest and began entering the Southeastern market in 2021, initially focusing on states such as Texas and Oklahoma. The chain offers a diverse range of beverages, including coffee, shakes, smoothies, lemonades, sodas, teas, and baked goods, appealing to a wide variety of customers.
Currently, North Augusta stands as the only proposed site for a Dutch Bros. Coffee location in South Carolina. No other locations have been established in Georgia as of this date, highlighting North Augusta’s significance in the chain’s expansion strategy.
