Law enforcement arrived on the scene to find Wright lying in the roadway. He was pronounced dead at 2:45 p.m. by the Richmond County Coroner’s Office upon arrival. Wright was reportedly crossing the 3500 block of Windsor Spring Road when a vehicle traveling southbound struck him.
The driver implicated in this fatal incident has been identified as 45-year-old Chiquita Dawson. After colliding with Wright, Dawson attempted to flee the scene but parked her vehicle at the Richmond County Fire Department Station 18 down the street. Dawson was subsequently taken to the Charles B. Webster Detention Center for processing. Records reveal that she has a troubling history, including previous arrests for cocaine possession, driving under the influence (DUI), and leaving the scene of an accident. Notably, a cocaine charge in 2001 led to a four-year prison sentence for Dawson.
Authorities have begun an investigation into the hit-and-run incident, and an autopsy for Taveon Wright has been scheduled to determine the circumstances surrounding his death. Additionally, officials are working to identify the victim and contact his next of kin.
The area where the incident occurred has seen its share of traffic accidents, raising concerns among local residents regarding pedestrian safety. This hit-and-run case has led to renewed discussions about driver accountability and the legal consequences of fleeing a crash scene.
As investigations continue, the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office is appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has additional information to come forward. Public support can assist in bringing clarity to this tragic event and ensuring justice for the victim’s family.
Hit-and-run incidents often leave communities shaken, prompting greater calls for awareness and better enforcement of traffic laws. As the investigation unfolds, the local community and law enforcement officials hope to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
