Augusta Preparatory Day School is requesting a zoning variance from Columbia County to build a new security gate and wall aimed at improving safety and accessibility for students and staff. This significant architectural feature will include durable materials and a prominent entrance displaying the school’s name. The project, which will be completed in phases, signifies the school’s commitment to enhancing its campus infrastructure for future growth and security.

Augusta, Georgia – Augusta Preparatory Day School is seeking a zoning variance from Columbia County to construct a new security gate and wall along Flowing Wells Road, aimed at enhancing safety and accessibility for students and staff. The proposed project includes a significant architectural feature described as a “monumental entrance and security wall” that will serve as a focal point for the school.

The planned wall will be constructed using durable materials such as brick, concrete blocks, and cast stone masonry, ensuring both functionality and aesthetic appeal. Additionally, the installation will feature cast aluminum lettering displaying the school’s name prominently at the entrance. An ornamental metal gate will be part of the design, which is intended to remain open during regular operation hours to facilitate ease of access.

Positioned strategically, the main entrance will be located where Bussey Lane and Old Trail Road intersect with Flowing Wells Road. To enhance security further, a secondary fence will be extended over 500 feet from either side of the new gate, reaching both edges of the property line along Flowing Wells Road.

The construction will occur in two distinct phases, depending on the availability of funding. The first phase will focus on the monumental entrance, which is expected to be constructed immediately and completed over the upcoming summer months. The second phase, which involves erecting the adjoining security fence, will proceed as funds become available.

Augusta Preparatory Day School was established in 1960, originally serving as a middle and high school. In 1988, the institution merged with Augusta Country Day School, expanding its offerings to include elementary grades. Currently, Augusta Prep has an enrollment of approximately 420 students, with plans to increase capacity to a maximum of 600 pupils in the future.

The request for a zoning variance reflects both the school’s commitment to student safety and its intention to improve campus infrastructure to accommodate potential growth. By modernizing its entrance and reinforcing security measures, Augusta Prep aims to create a welcoming yet secure environment for its students and faculty.

The Columbia County Board of Commissioners will evaluate the zoning variance application, weighing the proposed developments against local regulations and community impact. If approved, the project will represent a significant investment in the school’s facilities and overall safety protocol, aligning with similar initiatives seen across educational institutions aiming to bolster security.

As Augusta Preparatory Day School awaits the decision on its zoning request, the community remains engaged with the development process, highlighting the importance of school safety and adaptability in addressing modern challenges in education.
