The expo served as a critical link for veterans seeking assistance and improving their quality of life as they navigate post-military challenges.
Augusta, GA – More than 700 veterans gathered at the VA Augusta Expo on May 14 at the WT Johnson Center to access crucial resources and support as they transition to civilian life. The expo, which ran from 8:30 AM to 4 PM, brought together various organizations to assist veterans with their needs, ranging from benefits claims to employment opportunities.
The event featured numerous services designed to aid transitioning military members and veterans. Organizations participated from as far away as Washington, D.C., showcasing their commitment to the veteran community. Attendees could receive help with filing VA benefits claims, job applications, mental health support, and information on suicide prevention and homelessness.
Among the highlights of the expo was the VA Augusta’s homeless veteran program, which is ranked number one in the nation for successfully placing veterans into permanent housing. Will Martin, Chief of Public Affairs for VA Augusta, advocated for the program’s significance, emphasizing the availability of staff resources on both sides of the South Carolina and Georgia border. Veterans experiencing homelessness or those at risk were encouraged to seek assistance at the expo to expedite their journey to permanent housing.
The growing veteran population in Augusta has been attributed to nearby Fort Eisenhower, as many service members transition to civilian life in the region. To better support these veterans, the expo was organized to provide comprehensive information about the benefits available to them, ensuring they know how to take advantage of the resources at their disposal.
Michelle Terry with the Center of Women Veterans also iterated the VA’s dedication to keeping veterans informed about their benefits and ensuring they feel supported in their transition. The high turnout at the expo led to discussions among attendees regarding the potential for extending the event’s duration, particularly to accommodate those who face transportation challenges.
The VA Augusta Expo included a variety of specialized workshops, a benefits fair, a health care fair, and a hiring fair. Veterans had the opportunity to enhance their job-seeking skills by receiving assistance with resumes, learning interview techniques, and networking with employers from different industries.
Recognizing May as Mental Health Awareness Month, the VA Augusta health system has rolled out new initiatives aimed at improving veterans’ mental health. In response to needs within the community, they have started accepting involuntary psychiatric admissions to remove barriers for veterans facing crises.
VA Secretary Doug Collins underscored the importance of improving access to care and benefits for eligible veterans, their families, caregivers, and survivors. The expo serves as a vital link for veterans to connect with the services designed to help them navigate the complexities of post-military life.
As the VA Augusta continues to foster connections and resources for veterans, the success of events like the Augusta Expo highlights the ongoing commitment to supporting those who have served the nation. Moving forward, the VA aims to build on this success and further enhance the experience and resources available to veterans in the Augusta area.
