Jim Dent, a celebrated golfer known for his contributions to the sport and as a local legend in Augusta, has passed away at the age of 85 due to complications from a stroke. His career spanned over 16 years on the PGA Tour, and he later excelled in the PGA Tour Champions. Dent’s impact extended beyond the golf course, influencing future generations of golfers and being recognized for his charitable work and mentorship. The city honored him by renaming a road in his memory, ensuring his legacy will live on in Augusta and the broader golfing community.

Augusta, Georgia – Jim Dent, a prominent figure in the world of golf, passed away at the age of 85 due to complications from a recent stroke. His legacy in the sport is marked by determination and resilience, influencing generations of golfers, particularly in Augusta, where he was considered a local legend.

Dent began his career in an unconventional manner, starting as a caddy at both a local country club and the renowned Augusta National Golf Club. This early exposure set the foundation for a long journey in the sport, earning him recognition despite not qualifying to play in a Masters tournament during his career.

Throughout his time as a professional golfer, Dent played on the PGA Tour for an impressive 16 consecutive years, participating in at least 22 tournaments each season. Despite his commitment and skill, he did not secure any tournament wins, accumulating total earnings of $564,809. His best performance on the PGA Tour occurred in 1972, where he tied for second place at the Walt Disney World Open Invitational, finishing nine strokes behind legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus.

In addition to his PGA Tour achievements, Dent competed in five U.S. Opens and later transitioned to the PGA Tour Champions, formerly known as the senior circuit, after turning 50 in 1989. He quickly found success, winning two tournaments in his debut year and four in the subsequent year, with total earnings exceeding $9 million from the senior tour. His extraordinary capacity for long drives set him apart from many of his competitors and garnered admiration from fans and fellow golfers alike.

Dent’s impact on golf extended beyond his performance on the course. As part of a small group of Black golfers, including pioneers like Charlie Sifford, Pete Brown, and Lee Elder, he helped pave the way for future generations in a predominantly white sport. His contributions reached further as he became involved with Callaway Golf, notably with the development of the Big Bertha driver, showcasing his entrepreneurial spirit.

In recognition of his lasting influence, the city of Augusta honored him by renaming the road leading to The Patch golf course as Jim Dent Way. A graduate of Laney High School, where he excelled in football, Dent made the significant decision to decline a scholarship to Paine College to pursue golf instead. His commitment to the sport exemplified his passion and dedication.

Described by colleagues as competitive yet easygoing, Dent left an indelible mark on both the PGA Tour Champions and its surrounding community. In 2022, he was inducted into the Caddie Hall of Fame and the African-American Golfers Hall of Fame, solidifying his status as a revered member of the golfing world.

Beyond golf, Dent was known for his charitable contributions and dedication to mentoring younger players in the sport. Just weeks prior to his passing, he participated in a 50th anniversary celebration honoring Lee Elder’s participation in the Masters, reflecting his deep connection to Augusta and its rich golfing heritage.

Jim Dent’s legacy will endure in Augusta and beyond, remembered not only for his remarkable golf career but also for his generous spirit and the pathways he forged for aspiring golfers. His contributions to the sport and the community ensure that he will be fondly remembered as a true ambassador of golf.
