Augusta University recently held a mini commencement ceremony to honor graduating student-athletes Avery Jaynes and Emily McBride, who attended a national track meet instead of the main graduation. Augusta, Georgia – Augusta University held a special mini commencement ceremony on May 12, 2025, honoring graduating student-athletes Avery Jaynes and Emily McBride, who were unable to attend the main graduation event due to their participation in a national track meet. The ceremony took place at Christenberry Fieldhouse and was attended by university leadership, faculty, staff, and family members.
During the ceremony, President Russell T. Keen, EdD, congratulated the graduates for their remarkable academic and athletic achievements. The event highlighted Jaynes and McBride’s successful careers in track and field, as well as their dedication to their studies.
The keynote address was delivered by Retired Brig. Gen. Jeff Foley, who recognized the hard work and perseverance of the graduates. Additional remarks were made by Dr. Judi Wilson, Dean of the College of Education and Human Development, and Dr. Jennifer Sullivan, Interim Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost, and Dean of The Graduate School, further celebrating the accomplishments of the two athletes.
Avery Jaynes is a senior from Brooklet, Georgia, and a two-time Peach Belt Conference Cross Country Runner of the Year. She has gained recognition for her outstanding performance on the track, holding the records for both the 5,000m and 10,000m events at Augusta University and within the Peach Belt Conference. Jaynes has been instrumental in contributing to the university’s athletic legacy, culminating her undergraduate career with notable titles and qualifications.
Emily McBride, a senior from Peachtree City, Georgia, is also a distinguished athlete, recognized as a USTFCCCA All-Region honoree. She holds the school record in the 3,000m steeplechase, showcasing her skill and dedication to the sport. The mini commencement served to acknowledge her achievements and the impact she has made in Jaguar Athletics throughout her time at Augusta University.
The celebratory event was not only a recognition of the athletes’ physical accomplishments but also of their commitment to academic excellence.
