Police caution tape and emergency lights at MacArthur Park Apartments

News Summary

A late-night shooting at the MacArthur Park Apartments in Augusta led to the death of 28-year-old Kameron Mason. The incident, which involved an altercation over pool access, also left another individual injured. Despite recent security upgrades, residents express ongoing safety concerns. This marks the second deadly shooting in Augusta within the week, highlighting a troubling trend of violent crime in the area.

Augusta

One person has died and another injured following a shooting at the MacArthur Park Apartments in Augusta late Thursday night. Richmond County Coroner’s Office confirmed that 28-year-old Kameron Mason was killed in the incident, which occurred at approximately 10:28 p.m.

Deputies from the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of gunfire at the apartment complex located at 110 Integrity Drive. Upon arrival, law enforcement found two individuals with gunshot wounds. Mason was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:36 p.m., having suffered at least one gunshot wound. The coroner has scheduled an autopsy for the deceased.

The second individual, who has not yet been identified, was transported to Wellstar for medical treatment but their current condition remains undisclosed. The investigation into the shooting is still ongoing, and authorities have not released any information regarding potential suspects.

Details Surrounding the Incident

Witnesses reported that the shooting appeared to stem from an altercation, possibly involving individuals who refused to vacate the pool area of the apartment complex. Residents have raised concerns about ongoing issues with unauthorized use of the pool by non-residents, which has led to multiple calls to law enforcement in the past.

The management of the MacArthur Park Apartments had recently implemented upgraded security measures, including the installation of surveillance cameras and enhancements to access systems, in an effort to improve safety at the complex. Despite these measures, the tragic event brings to light ongoing safety concerns shared by many residents.

Context of Violence in the Area

This incident marks the second deadly shooting in Augusta within the same week. Just a day earlier, a separate shooting on Lumpkin Road resulted in the death of Jaquavious Watkins, who was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at Wellstar. In that case, the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office is actively seeking to question 18-year-old Tayshaun Antonio Goodwin in relation to the Lumpkin Road shooting.

The recent surge in violent crime in the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA) has alarmed community members and law enforcement alike. Over the past three years, approximately 200 deaths due to violent crime have been reported in the region, with Augusta being significantly impacted by this troubling trend.

Authorities continue to encourage residents to report any suspicious activities and cooperate with law enforcement investigations. As the situation develops, updates will be provided as more information becomes available regarding the ongoing inquiries into both shootings.
