Workers implementing safety improvements on U.S. Highway 1 in Augusta.
As summer approaches, Augusta and West Columbia are improving road safety with significant upgrades to U.S. Highway 1 to reduce traffic accidents. Key projects include new medians, sidewalks, and traffic lights, addressing past issues that resulted in high crash rates. With federal funding of over $9 million, these efforts aim to protect drivers and pedestrians. Authorities are also advising drivers on safe practices as they prepare for the busy travel season ahead.
Augusta and West Columbia are taking significant steps to improve road safety ahead of the summer travel season, which is often marked by increased traffic and longer trips for families and travelers. With these enhancements, officials aim to reduce the potential for accidents and improve the overall safety of these busy corridors.
The improvements on U.S. Highway 1 in West Columbia will include the construction of new medians, crosswalks, signage, traffic lights, pavement markings, and accommodations for U-turns. This comprehensive safety improvement project, which began in October 2020, is a response to a series of findings by the Federal Highway Safety Improvement program. The program identified the highway as needing urgent safety enhancements due to a substantial volume of traffic and excessive crash rates.
A recent road safety audit conducted with local agencies confirmed unsafe traffic conditions, which underscored the need for these critical upgrades. In 2014 alone, there were 302 crashes reported on U.S. Highway 1, raising serious concerns about the highway’s safety standards. The mayor of West Columbia pointed out that these improvements not only aim to save lives but enhance the overall safety of one of the community’s busiest roads.
Similarly, the Augusta Road Safety Improvement Project seeks to bolster safety measures on U.S. Highway 1. Key features of this project will include raised medians, updated traffic signals, and improved sidewalks. Alarmingly, from 2011 to 2014, this area saw over 1000 crashes and 278 injuries, including three fatalities. Recognizing the toll of such incidents, this initiative has been allocated more than $9 million in federal funding and began in October.
As part of the safety initiatives, the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) is urging drivers to practice patience and remain aware while navigating construction zones. The entire project is expected to be completed by spring 2026, bringing critical updates that will significantly improve the safety of drivers and pedestrians alike.
In conjunction with infrastructure improvements, drivers are reminded of essential safety measures before hitting the road this summer. This includes checking vehicle systems such as the battery, tire pressure, engine oil, and tire wear. Additionally, it’s critical to wear seatbelts and avoid distractions such as cell phones, as well as to never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
The state of Georgia’s move over law remains in effect, requiring drivers to change lanes or slow down when they come across emergency vehicles with flashing lights on the roadside. Compliance with such regulations is emphasized by safety advocates, who note that these laws protect not only drivers but also roadside workers and emergency responders.
Recent road safety checks in Augusta have been revealing, with officers from multiple agencies making 20 DUI arrests during inspections of both vehicles and drivers. Citations were also issued for various traffic violations, including failing to wear seat belts and misusing child safety seats. To further promote child passenger safety, the community initiative distributed complimentary car seats to families in need.
As the unofficial start of the summer vacation season unfolds, road safety experts are urging travelers to prioritize safe driving practices and remain vigilant on the roads. The enhancements being made in Augusta and West Columbia demonstrate a commitment to protecting all road users as traffic volumes increase in the coming months.
