Augusta – Richmond County sheriff’s deputies are investigating a double shooting that occurred at MacArthur Park Apartments on Little Rock Drive. The incident was reported on Thursday evening around 10:30 p.m., leading to a tragic outcome for one victim and serious injuries for another.
Upon arrival at the scene, deputies discovered two individuals suffering from gunshot wounds. Kameron Mason, 28, from Augusta, was shot at least once and was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:30 p.m. by Richmond County Coroner Mark Bowen. An autopsy for Mason has been scheduled as part of the ongoing investigation. The second victim was promptly transported to Wellstar-MCG for medical treatment. Their current condition has not been disclosed.
In a separate but related incident, the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office is also conducting a homicide investigation concerning a shooting that took place on Lumpkin Road on Wednesday night. The victim of that incident, identified as Jaquavious Watkins, 26, was found with at least one gunshot wound and was later pronounced dead at 8:20 p.m. at Wellstar-MCG. The Lumpkin Road case has officially been classified as a homicide, prompting an investigation by the Criminal Investigation Division (CID).
Authorities have identified 18-year-old Tayshaun Antonio Goodwin as a suspect in the Lumpkin Road shooting. He is described as standing 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighing 130 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. Goodwin is known to frequent the Harrisburg and Lumpkin Road neighborhoods and has multiple outstanding warrants, including charges for murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.
The recent shootings occur amidst a troubling increase in violent crime in the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA), which has resulted in approximately 200 fatalities over the past three years. Various communities throughout the region have felt the impact, especially Augusta, where residents are increasingly concerned about safety and crime rates.
In light of this situation, authorities are urging anyone with information regarding Goodwin’s whereabouts to contact Sergeant Lucas Heise or the on-call investigators at the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office. Tipsters can reach them at 706-821-1026 or 706-821-1020. The local community is being encouraged to assist in the ongoing efforts to solve this violent crime and bring about justice for the victims and their families.
As the investigations continue, the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office is prioritizing public safety and the apprehension of suspects involved in these incidents. Local law enforcement stresses the importance of community involvement and cooperation to combat rising crime rates effectively.
