While the canal will be accessible during the holiday weekend, the towpath and walking trail from Savannah Rapids Pavilion to the Augusta Raw Water Pumping Station will continue to be closed to the public. As a part of the ongoing recovery efforts, the Augusta Canal National Heritage Area encourages residents and visitors to support the Savannah Rapids Kayak Rental, which will be operational throughout the holiday period.
Kayaking and canoeing trips can be booked through Savannah Rapids Kayak Rentals between May 23 and May 26. This initiative offers a unique opportunity for outdoor recreation while the canal is temporarily accessible, despite some areas being under repair.
As of May 20, contractors have completed a one-way cleanup along the river side of the towpath. They are now scheduled to work down the canal side next, focusing on essential repair work. This cleanup process involves the removal of trees, root balls, and addressing holes in the canal bank to ensure that it can be safely reopened to the public.
Despite the reopening of the canal, officials emphasize that the duration for the complete reopening of the canal after repairs remains undetermined. Work on repairs has been paused for the holiday weekend to allow public enjoyment, but the overall safety remains a priority.
Augusta Utilities warns the public to avoid the pumping station and to be cautious of leaning trees near the canal. It is essential for all users to stay off the embankment because of the risk of potential hazards. While kayaking and canoeing are allowed, participants are urged to refrain from accessing the towpath from the pumping station to Savannah Rapids Pavilion until it is deemed safe.
In response to the damage sustained, Augusta Utilities has approved a contract with CERES Environmental Services for disaster debris removal and channel cleanup. Richmond County has already allocated approximately $2 million for repair efforts, with total repair costs expected to reach around $10 million. Completing the recovery process will require draining the canal, removing all obstructive trees and root balls, and rebuilding the embankment.
Officials estimate that the canal may not fully reopen until early fall. To celebrate the complete reopening, a public event will be planned, marking the successful restoration of this vital recreational area.
