Augusta – A series of violent incidents occurred recently in Augusta, including a shooting near T.W. Josey High School and an administrative action regarding a Richmond County Marshal’s Office employee. Concerns are rising among parents and community members following these events, prompting discussions about school safety and student conduct.

On the morning of Tuesday, a shooting incident took place near T.W. Josey High School involving students from Murphey Middle School and the Alternative School at Morgan Road. The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office reported the shooting occurred around 9:14 AM at the intersection of Koger Street and Eagles Way. One female student sustained injuries from the incident and was transported by EMS to a local hospital for treatment.

In response to the shooting, both T.W. Josey High School and Murphey Middle School went into lockdown as a precautionary measure. Additionally, Jenkins-White and Wilkinson Gardens elementary schools secured their premises during this time. The lockdowns lasted for approximately one hour, after which they were lifted. Parents expressed concern and rushed to the schools to pick up their children once the incident was reported.

In a related matter, the Richmond County School System announced that the incident near the high school would be addressed under their Code of Student Conduct and Discipline. The investigation into this shooting remains ongoing, with no further information released at this time.

Elsewhere, the Richmond County Marshal’s Office has reported the termination of an employee following an investigation into misconduct. Meanwhile, the FBI has launched an investigation at the Augusta-Richmond County Municipal Building, although specifics regarding the investigation have not been publicly disclosed.

In a more positive light, high school seniors from South Aiken High School participated in a ‘senior walk’ at Millbrook Elementary on Friday morning. This event allowed graduating students to revisit their former school and connect with current students and staff. One graduate expressed bittersweet feelings about the significance of the senior walk, reflecting on the connections established across generations.

During the senior walk, students were encouraged to persevere through challenges, noting that the tough love displayed by teachers often indicates a belief in their potential. This initiative served as a reminder of the strong community ties and support systems that exist within local educational institutions.

The recent episodes of violence and misconduct within schools and the community underscore ongoing challenges faced by educational institutions and law enforcement agencies. As investigations continue and circumstances surrounding the various incidents are clarified, residents of Augusta will be closely monitoring developments to ensure a safe environment for students and the public.
