Augusta

A tragic car crash in Augusta claimed the life of 42-year-old Keisha Mercer and left her family in mourning. The incident occurred on Thursday morning at approximately 7:06 a.m. on Deans Bridge Road near Dover Street, resulting in multiple injuries and ongoing investigations by the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.

Keisha Mercer, a resident of Statesboro, suffered fatal injuries from the accident. Her husband, O’Quillian Mercer, aged 44, endured serious back fractures but was released from the hospital on Saturday. Their 4-year-old daughter, Lyndsey, is currently in critical condition at an Augusta hospital, facing a severe neck injury and a broken arm.

The crash was initiated when a tire blew out on the Mercer family’s vehicle, leading the car to veer across traffic lanes on Highway 25/Peach Orchard Road. This resulted in a collision with a tractor-trailer shortly thereafter. Reports indicate uncertainty regarding whether Lyndsey was secured in her car seat at the time of the accident, as she was ejected from the vehicle. Authorities had to remove the car seat from the wreckage to reach Keisha Mercer.

The tragedy marks one of two severe accidents reported on the same morning in Augusta. Darrell Walker, a 56-year-old from Hephzibah, was involved in a separate fatal incident that occurred around the same time. He died from injuries sustained in another collision and was pronounced dead at Wellstar MCG Health at 7:41 a.m. An autopsy has been scheduled for him as part of the ongoing investigations.

Details surrounding the crashes are still unfolding, with investigators piecing together the circumstances leading to the incidents. The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office has committed to providing further updates as more information becomes available.

The community is coming to terms with the aftermath of this tragic event, with many expressing sorrow for the Mercer family and the lost lives in the crashes. The impact on those affected by the accidents highlights the risks associated with road travel and the importance of vehicle safety measures.

As investigations continue, families and loved ones are left grappling with loss and uncertainty. The Mercer family’s situation, particularly the critical condition of young Lyndsey, has prompted an outpouring of support from the community. While they navigate this challenging time, many hope for Lyndsey’s swift recovery and honor the memory of Keisha Mercer.

Authorities remind the public to prioritize road safety and to ensure that all passengers are securely fastened, especially children, to help prevent similar tragedies in the future.
