News Summary

A fatal crash on Mike Padgett Highway in Augusta resulted in the death of 58-year-old Andrew Mark Pregel IV. The accident involved a head-on collision between his Ford Fiesta and a Chevrolet Avalanche. This crash is part of a deadly week for Augusta, which has seen multiple fatalities on local roads, raising concerns about traffic safety in the community.

Augusta – A fatal crash on Mike Padgett Highway claimed the life of 58-year-old Andrew Mark Pregel IV from Augusta earlier this month. The accident occurred in the 3600 block of Mike Padgett Highway, resulting in significant tragedy for the local community.

The Richmond County Coroner’s Office confirmed that Pregel was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:45 a.m. following the impact between his 2019 Ford Fiesta and a 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche. Preliminary reports indicate that the driver of the Avalanche swerved into oncoming traffic, leading to a head-on collision.

An investigation into the incident revealed that the Avalanche’s driver failed to maintain their lane prior to the crash. As a result of the collision, Andrew Mark Pregel IV suffered fatal injuries. Meanwhile, the driver of the Avalanche was transported to the hospital for treatment following the incident.

This tragic crash is part of a particularly deadly week on Augusta’s roads. Just two days before Pregel’s accident, another catastrophic head-on collision occurred at the intersection of Peach Orchard and Tobacco roads. In that incident, Camden Poole, an 8-year-old second-grader from Hephzibah Elementary, was killed after being struck by a pickup truck driven by Lee Earnest Jones Jr., who has since faced legal charges in connection with this event.

On May 8, one day after Pregel’s death, tragedy struck again when 56-year-old Darrell Walker lost his life in a crash at the intersection of Deans Bridge Road and Dover Street. This series of accidents has raised concerns about road safety in the area. The Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office also reported the loss of one of their dispatchers during the same week as Pregel’s accident, compounding the community’s grief during this period of multiple fatalities.

Local authorities are urging drivers to exercise caution and adhere to traffic laws in an effort to curb accidents and ensure the safety of all road users. The recent string of fatalities has sparked conversations around traffic safety measures in Augusta and the surrounding areas, highlighting the importance of responsible driving practices.

As the investigations into these incidences continue, the community is left mourning the loss of these individuals and grappling with the need for change to prevent further tragedies on the road.
