Construction of new passenger security lanes at Augusta Regional Airport.
Augusta Regional Airport has received a $4 million federal grant to support its expansion efforts, particularly for the development of new passenger security screening lanes. This initiative is part of over $13 million allocated for Georgia airports to enhance infrastructure ahead of significant events like the 2026 Masters Tournament. Local leaders and federal officials emphasize that improved airport facilities are crucial for accommodating visitors and boosting local economic viability despite an ongoing funding gap faced by state airports.
Augusta Regional Airport has received a significant boost in its expansion efforts, securing a $4 million federal grant through the Federal Airport Terminal Program (ATP). This funding is part of a larger allocation of over $13 million designated for airports across Georgia, aimed at supporting crucial development projects ahead of major events, such as the 2026 Masters Tournament.
The announcement was made by Senators Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock, highlighting the federal support that local airports in the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA) will receive from the recent bipartisan infrastructure law. The funds are intended to enhance airport infrastructure, ultimately assisting local businesses and communities by improving accessibility and efficiency.
The grant awarded to Augusta Regional Airport will specifically finance the expansion of the airport’s passenger security screening checkpoint. The project will feature the construction of two additional passenger screening lanes, alongside a supplemental TSA office and operational space. The airport is focusing on completing the new screening facility in time for the 2026 Masters Tournament, a key event that draws international visitors to the region.
This recent development follows a prior funding infusion of $4 million in 2023 for improvements in terminal gates 3 and 4, which added approximately 2,000 square feet to the gate area and included two new passenger boarding bridges. The upcoming expansion is expected to increase the number of screening lanes to four, thereby enhancing operational throughput and providing greater flexibility for travelers.
Despite these recent advances, Georgia’s commercial airports face a considerable challenge with an $83.5 million annual funding gap for capital improvement projects. Currently, Georgia airports are reliant on an annual funding of about $16 million from the FAA, along with $2.8 million from the state. This funding is significantly lower when compared to neighboring states; for instance, airports in North Carolina receive $89 million, while Tennessee airports benefit from $33 million annually for similar initiatives.
The funding gap poses a serious concern for state officials and airport operators, prompting discussions during recent meetings of the State Transportation Board. There is a pronounced need for increased awareness among Georgia state legislators regarding the challenges faced in securing adequate funding for commercial airports. The reliance on the state’s general-fund budget for airport operations further complicates the issue, emphasizing the importance of addressing these funding disparities.
Overall, the new federal grant for Augusta Regional Airport signals a positive step towards enhanced travel infrastructure that is essential for accommodating the increased traffic expected during major events such as the Masters Tournament. With substantial investments in airport facilities, local leaders are optimistic about improving the region’s economic viability and ensuring seamless travel experiences for visitors.
