Augusta – A man has died following a shooting that occurred in his own home early Sunday morning. Brandon Johnson, aged 34, was shot at least once in a suspected domestic altercation and was pronounced dead on Friday at 6:35 p.m. at Doctors Hospital.
The shooting took place around 7 a.m. in the 3600 block of Madrid Drive, prompting a response from local law enforcement. Deputies arriving at the scene discovered Brandon Johnson with a gunshot wound in the hallway of the residence. He was quickly attended to by a witness, who was applying pressure to his chest with a towel.
Authorities apprehended Mark Johnson, aged 30, at the scene shortly after the shooting occurred. The arrested individual, who also resides at the home, has been charged with aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime in connection with the incident.
According to the witness on the scene, the shooting was precipitated by an argument between the two men. It was noted that Brandon Johnson appeared to be intoxicated at the time and had been activating various switches in the house, which reportedly led to the confrontation. Mark Johnson confronted Brandon in the hallway before the altercation escalated into gunfire.
Following the incident, Brandon Johnson was quickly transported to the hospital, but unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries several days later. An autopsy has been scheduled to conclusively determine the cause of death.
Despite sharing the same last name, officials have classified the incident as “aggravated assault-nonfamily,” suggesting that the relationship between the two men may not be familial despite their surname. The investigation is ongoing as deputies gather more information about the circumstances leading to the shooting.
This incident raises concerns regarding firearm safety and domestic disputes. Gun violence continues to be an issue that affects many communities, and this tragic event serves as a somber reminder of the potential consequences of heated arguments and substance use.
Officials are urging anyone with additional information related to the incident to come forward as they continue their investigation into the events that transpired on Madrid Drive. As local authorities proceed with their inquiries, the community grapples with the aftermath of the violence.
