McDuffie County, GA – A tragic single-vehicle accident late Friday night resulted in the death of a 21-year-old passenger. The incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. in the 800 block of Moose Club Road, where authorities reported that Caden Stevens-Butwell, a resident of Evans, was pronounced dead at the scene.

McDuffie County Coroner Paul Johnson confirmed the fatality and noted that an autopsy has been scheduled for Stevens-Butwell as investigations continue. The Georgia Highway Patrol is currently gathering details regarding the circumstances surrounding the crash, although specific information remains limited at this time.

Stevens-Butwell was traveling as a passenger in the vehicle when the accident occurred. No additional information regarding the driver or the specifics of the crash has been made available at this time. The ongoing investigation by the Georgia Highway Patrol is expected to provide further insight into the factors that may have contributed to this tragic incident.

Link to Homicide Investigation

In a separate but related event, authorities are actively investigating the death of Brandon Johnson, 34, who was shot at least once on a previous date but succumbed to his injuries on Friday. Law enforcement activities connected to Johnson’s case are ongoing, showcasing a broader pattern of violence in the area.

On April 24, a search warrant was executed in Thomson, involving the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, McDuffie County Sheriff’s Office, and Richmond County SWAT teams as part of the homicide investigation related to the death of Mario Clemons. During this operation, a suspect named Devicco LaTroy Moss, 43, fled from officers while driving a blue Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck.

Authorities pursued Moss after he failed to stop, leading to a high-speed chase that resulted in an officer from the Motor Carrier Compliance Division (MCCD) crashing and overturning his patrol car. Fortunately, the officer involved was not injured. The pursuit concluded when Moss’s truck collided with a tractor-trailer at the intersection of Ridge Road and Washington Highway. Despite the driver of the tractor-trailer being unharmed, Moss was pronounced dead at the scene, and his body is also set to undergo an autopsy at the GBI Crime Lab.

Ongoing Investigations

The Georgia State Patrol is responsible for investigating both crashes linked to these incidents, with increased focus placed on the circumstances surrounding the fatalities. Additionally, the investigation into Mario Clemons’ death is still active, as authorities continue to collect information and piece together the details surrounding these violent occurrences.

This series of incidents has raised concerns in the community, prompting calls for increased safety measures and heightened awareness regarding road and public safety. As investigations unfold, officials urge anyone with information relating to the cases to come forward to assist in bringing clarity to these troubling events.

The McDuffie County community is grappling with the implications of these tragic incidents, and the investigations aim to uncover the causes and provide closure to the families affected by the loss of life.
