The Augusta women’s basketball team honors three student-athletes for their academic excellence as members of the Peach Belt Conference Team of Academic Distinction. Tyasia Freeman, Brianna Meekins, and Nyaneit Puok represent a blend of strong athletics and impressive GPAs, contributing to the team’s remarkable season. Augusta – The Augusta women’s basketball team has recognized three of its student-athletes for their outstanding academic performance, as they were named to the 2024-25 Peach Belt Conference Team of Academic Distinction. The honored players are graduate student Tyasia Freeman, senior Brianna Meekins, and senior Nyaneit Puok, highlighting the team’s dedication to both athletics and academics.
Tyasia Freeman, a graduate student from Waynesboro, Georgia, is pursuing a Master of Kinesiology and boasts an impressive 3.83 GPA. Brianna Meekins, who hails from Bridgeport, Connecticut, is majoring in Health Services and has a GPA of 3.54. Meanwhile, Nyaneit Puok from Des Moines, Iowa, is studying Kinesiology with a GPA of 3.58. Their academic excellence is complemented by contributions to the Jaguars’ successful season.
During the 2024-25 campaign, the Augusta Jaguars achieved a remarkable 21-win season for the second consecutive year, a feat not accomplished since 1993. The team was consistently ranked in the NCAA national top 25 and established itself as a formidable defensive force in Division II basketball. Augusta finished the season ranked fifth nationally for three-point field goal percentage and led the Peach Belt Conference in scoring defense, while also placing second in steals per game.
To qualify for the Peach Belt Conference Team of Academic Distinction, student-athletes must demonstrate both athletic and academic prowess. The criteria include participation in at least half of the team’s games as a starter or significant contributor, maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher, and completing at least one academic year with sophomore athletic eligibility at their institution. This initiative, overseen by the league’s sports information directors, aims to promote excellence in both academics and athletics.
