North Augusta – The search for Susan Rhodes, a 55-year-old woman who went missing after a car crash on Gregory Lake Road, is intensifying. Rhodes was last seen wandering into the woods following the incident, which took place on Wednesday afternoon, around 4:30 p.m. Law enforcement agencies have been conducting a thorough search since her disappearance, and this effort resumed early Thursday morning at 7 a.m.

Rhodes has not been in contact with her family since she went missing. However, law enforcement authorities have reached out to her son and sister to keep them informed of the search efforts. The North Augusta Department of Public Safety has been particularly vocal about their determination to find Rhodes, emphasizing that they will not falter in their search.

According to reports, Rhodes was last seen wearing a red shirt, black shoes, and a hat while having an arm in a sling. Her disappearance followed a car crash that sent her vehicle off the roadway and into a ditch. Witnesses noted that Rhodes appeared disoriented and might have suffered from a medical issue at the time of the incident.

Close to 20 marked and unmarked law enforcement vehicles are currently deployed in the search area. Multiple agencies are participating in the effort, including the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office, the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office, and the Aiken County Department of Public Safety. These teams are utilizing K-9 units and drones to comb through the heavily wooded region where Rhodes was last seen. Additionally, the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office has been contacted for drone assistance, and a South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) helicopter is also expected to aid in the search efforts on Thursday.

Authorities are especially concerned about a creek nearby that has risen to waist-deep due to recent rainfall, raising the stakes in their search for Rhodes. The area is challenging to navigate, as it is heavily wooded with several fallen trees from Hurricane Helene, further complicating rescue efforts. Rhodes was last observed traversing through a yard located on the 2200 block of Gregory Lake Road, which is adjacent to the wooded terrain.

Rhodes is described as being approximately 5 feet 5 inches tall. The authorities are urging the public to exercise caution while near the search area, as well as to contact dispatch at 803-441-4200 if they happen to spot Rhodes. Given the circumstances surrounding her disappearance, law enforcement officials do not believe that Rhodes poses a threat to the community and suspect that she may have encountered a medical episode.

The search for Susan Rhodes highlights the urgent efforts of local agencies to locate missing persons amidst challenging conditions. The commitment and resources being deployed reflect the importance of ensuring the safety of individuals in the community. As the search continues, hope remains strong among family and friends for Rhodes’ safe return.
