Augusta, Georgia – Augusta University has announced the addition of men’s and women’s indoor track and field, which will officially begin competition during the 2025-26 academic year. This strategic move is part of a broader investment into the university’s cross country and track and field programs, aimed at enhancing athletic opportunities for student-athletes.

The introduction of these new programs aligns Augusta University with other prominent NCAA Division II institutions, providing year-round competitive opportunities for student-athletes. This marks the first new NCAA sport introduced at Augusta University since 2013, reflecting a continued commitment to expanding athletic offerings.

Head coach Jacob Burgamy, who took on his role in March 2023, will oversee both the new indoor programs and the existing cross country and track & field teams. Under his leadership, the men’s cross country team has experienced notable success, winning three consecutive Peach Belt Conference titles and achieving recognition within national rankings. Burgamy expressed enthusiasm for the expansion, highlighting that the addition of indoor track and field will create new opportunities for athletes to compete for championships on an annual basis.

The men’s and women’s indoor track programs are expected to be competitive. Ryan Erlacher, the Director of Athletics at Augusta University, anticipates that under Burgamy’s guidance, both programs will thrive. The new indoor facilities will serve as a venue for competitive and developmental activities for athletes specializing in distance, sprints, jumps, and throws.

The addition of indoor track and field is also part of Augusta University’s long-term vision for the sport, with future enhancements planned to further support student-athlete success. These enhancements will not only improve the programs but also strengthen Augusta’s overall athletic presence in the region.

In recent years, athletics at Augusta University have shown considerable promise. Jordan Robertson earned the distinction of being Augusta’s first cross country All-American in the fall of 2024 at the NCAA Championships held in Sacramento. Additionally, Avery Jaynes made history in the spring of 2025 as the first Track & Field All-American for Augusta, securing a podium finish in the 10,000m at the national meet in Pueblo, Colorado. These accomplishments underscore a growing track record of excellence within the university’s athletic programs.

The decision to develop an indoor track and field program is expected to not only attract new talent but also support existing athletes in their pursuit of competitive excellence. Fans and alumni of Augusta University can contribute to the success of Jaguar Athletics through donations and are encouraged to follow updates via the university’s social media channels and official websites.

This expansion into indoor track and field is seen as a pivotal development in Augusta University’s commitment to enhancing the athletic experience for student-athletes and fostering an environment that allows for holistic growth in sports.
