The addition aims to provide year-round competitive opportunities for student-athletes in various disciplines, reflecting the university’s dedication to fostering a robust athletic environment.

Augusta – Augusta University Athletics has officially announced plans to launch men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams, with competition set to commence in the 2025-26 academic year. This significant addition marks the first NCAA sport introduced by the university since 2013 and aligns Augusta with other top NCAA Division II institutions, which provide year-round competitive opportunities for their cross country and track student-athletes.

This strategic move comes on the heels of a series of investments aimed at enhancing Augusta’s cross country and track and field programs, further demonstrating the university’s commitment to developing competitive athletic offerings. The expansion into indoor track and field is seen as a crucial step forward in providing appropriate developmental opportunities for athletes across multiple disciplines, including distance events, sprints, jumps, and throws.

The head coach of cross country and track and field, Jacob Burgamy, will lead the newly established indoor programs in conjunction with his existing responsibilities. Since being appointed as head coach in March 2023, Burgamy has already made a notable impact, guiding the men’s cross country team to three consecutive Peach Belt Conference titles and achieving national rankings annually. Under his leadership, Augusta’s athletic teams have seen remarkable individual successes as well.

In fall 2024, the program celebrated its first All-American honor when Jordan Robertson finished among the top contenders at the NCAA Championships in Sacramento, making history as Augusta’s premier cross country All-American. Following that, the spring of 2025 brought in further accolades when Avery Jaynes became the university’s first NCAA Track & Field All-American with a podium finish in the 10,000m event at the national meet held in Pueblo, Colorado.

Director of Athletics Ryan Erlacher has emphasized the importance of adding indoor track and field as part of their expanding sports sponsorship lineup. With a robust framework already established, the university is positioned to foster a competitive environment for its athletes under Burgamy’s guidance. The implementation of these new programs is part of a broader vision aimed at enriching the overall track and field experience at Augusta, paving the way for future enhancements and successes in the athletic department.

Support for this initiative, along with information updates regarding Jaguar Athletics, can be found on the university’s dedicated website and various social media platforms. The addition of men’s and women’s indoor track and field not only underscores Augusta University’s dedication to developing a competitive athletic culture but also creates exciting opportunities for student-athletes to excel in their respective sports.
