Augusta, Ga. – Multiple events honoring Juneteenth were held in Augusta, Ga., on Saturday, bringing together the community to celebrate the significance of the occasion. The Augusta Museum of History was a central hub for activities, featuring educational tours, art projects, and interactive events aimed at highlighting the history and impact of Juneteenth, which commemorates the end of slavery in the United States.

Among the highlights at the museum was a workshop led by a local artist, focusing on the creation of traditional Edgefield face pots, a form of pottery with deep historical roots. Participants not only engaged in hands-on art but also learned about the history of Dave, the Potter, an enslaved individual who boldly risked his life to gain literacy and develop his craft. The museum displayed historical artifacts, including pots made by Dave, setting an informative backdrop for the art session. Krystal Lyon, the museum’s education coordinator, pointed out the importance of Juneteenth, particularly in light of the fact that over 6,000 enslaved individuals were recorded in Richmond County.

In addition to museum festivities, a Freedom Trail ride celebrated the significance of the day with family-friendly activities such as games, horse rides, a petting zoo, and bounce houses. Approximately 50 vendors participated in the event, which concluded around 11 p.m. The organizer, Davon Wallace, expressed gratitude for the large turnout and announced plans for another ride on July 19, which is set to be even larger and will involve road closures to facilitate greater participation.

Simultaneously, Augusta hosted its 9th annual Juneteenth Festival at the fairgrounds, which ran from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. This festival, organized by Band of Brothers Augusta, served to honor African American culture, commemorating the historical context of Juneteenth through an array of events including food, exhibits, and live music. Vendors offered traditional foods such as boiled peanuts, mac and cheese, and jambalaya, alongside handmade African attire and culturally inspired merchandise, enhancing the celebratory atmosphere.

Attendees reflected on the significance of Juneteenth, embracing themes of freedom and community connection. The festival committee highlighted that the celebrations were not solely aimed at entertainment but also served as a powerful reminder of progress and unity within Black culture. The importance of remembering the historical truths surrounding freedom and its delayed recognition in the United States was emphasized throughout the day’s events.

Amid the celebrations, the city of Augusta has been facing challenges, including a significant rise in homelessness, which has nearly doubled since January 2023. This stark contrast underscores the need for community solidarity and support, particularly during events that aim to uplift and recognize the struggles and achievements of African Americans.

As the community gathered for Juneteenth celebrations, the events not only recognized a pivotal moment in history but also fostered a spirit of unity and reflection among participants. The combination of art, education, and cultural appreciation played a crucial role in making this year’s Juneteenth observance memorable for all involved.
