North Augusta – James P. Bell, a distinguished World War II veteran and lifelong resident of North Augusta, passed away at the age of 98 on June 25, 2025. He dedicated his life to serving his community and his country, leaving behind a rich legacy that spanned nearly a century.

Graveside services are scheduled for Monday morning at 11 o’clock at Pineview Memorial Gardens, where Rev. Roy Kiser will officiate. Following the service, friends and family will gather at the gravesite to pay their respects and share memories of Mr. Bell.

Born on February 21, 1927, James P. Bell was a proud member of the North Augusta community. As a teenager, he began working for the Post Office, and he graduated from North Augusta High School in 1944. Shortly after graduating, he served in the Service Company, 7th Infantry, during World War II, as part of the Third Division, which played a critical role in the Army of occupation in Germany. Returning home in 1947, he further pursued his education at Clemson University, where he graduated in 1950.

Mr. Bell began his professional career at United Merchants & Manufacturing’s Clearwater Finishing Plant, from which he retired in 1988. His dedication to community service was evident as he became an active member of the First Baptist Church of North Augusta, where he not only served as a Sunday School teacher but also participated in the Finance Committee. Additionally, he was a proud member of the American Legion Post 71, demonstrating his commitment to veterans’ affairs and the well-being of his fellow servicemen.

After retirement, Mr. Bell took on the role of a census field office supervisor for Aiken and Bamberg counties in 1990. He enjoyed the outdoors and spent 18 years operating a Christmas tree farm with his lifelong friend, Charles Petty. He cherished the bonds he formed with his friends and family, notably as a valued member of the “no name” supper club, which has met monthly for over 50 years in his grandmother’s house in Edgefield County.

James P. Bell is remembered as a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Dr. Janice P. Bell; daughter Leigh Meabon; son Mark Bell; parents Rufus and Nell Bell; and sister and brother-in-law Gloria and Stephen Pardue. He is survived by his granddaughter Kathleen Sherrill, her husband Cliff, and great-grandson CJ Sherrill, along with numerous nieces and nephews who cherished him deeply.

The family is grateful to Lisa Pagano for her compassionate care of Mr. Bell in his final years. In lieu of flowers, they request that memorial contributions be made to the American Legion Post 71 or to a charity of one’s choice, reflecting Mr. Bell’s dedication to community service and support for those in need.

Arrangements are being handled by Posey Funeral Directors of North Augusta, ensuring Mr. Bell’s final journey is honored appropriately. His contributions to his family, community, and country will be fondly remembered and celebrated by all who knew him.
