On May 28, Daveyon TyShawn Williams, 23, was arrested and charged with vehicular homicide, hit-and-run, and driving under the influence (DUI). Wimberly was struck by a southbound vehicle and despite emergency responders attempting to revive him, he was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:12 a.m.

Authorities noted that while Wimberly laid dying, an individual stole personal items from his belongings, including a cell phone. This theft has prompted an outcry from officials as they described it as “reprehensible” and a “betrayal of our shared values as a community.” In response, the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office is offering a $7,500 reward for information leading to the capture of the person responsible for the theft.

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office is conducting the investigation in collaboration with the Burke County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities have identified a dark-colored sedan believed to have been involved in the hit-and-run, which was located in connection with Williams. Notably, Williams does not have any prior criminal record in Richmond County.

Wimberly was the grandson of the late Judge Sterling Wimberly of Burke County.
