Artistic rendering of the Outdoor Urban Adventure Center featuring a zipline and climbing tower in Augusta.
The Augusta Commission has approved plans for an Outdoor Urban Adventure Center featuring a zipline on the Freedom Bridge and an eight-story climbing tower. Funded primarily by SPLOST 8, the project aims to enhance the city’s recreational offerings and attract tourists. Construction is expected to begin after securing permits, with a target launch in spring 2026. The Forge is proposed to manage the center’s operations, which will include various outdoor activities and community events. Discussions on parking solutions for visitors are also ongoing.
Augusta – The Augusta Commission has taken significant steps towards enhancing the city’s recreational landscape with the approval of plans for an Outdoor Urban Adventure Center that will include a zipline and climbing tower. During a recent committee meeting, the commission received an update on the project aimed at transforming the riverfront into a premier outdoor experience.
In a move that is expected to attract both residents and tourists, the commission approved a zipline course to be located on the Freedom Bridge, formerly known as Fifth Street Bridge. This zipline will be a key highlight of the new adventure center, which will also feature a dramatic eight-story illuminated climbing tower, allowing visitors to enjoy breathtaking views above the Savannah River.
The project is being spearheaded by Destination Augusta, with funding primarily sourced from SPLOST 8, a one-cent sales tax meant to support public projects. The estimated cost for the entire project is approximately $2.95 million, with potential additional funding that may come from the Augusta-based Georgia Rehabilitation Institute, which emphasizes accessibility for all visitors.
Construction on the Outdoor Urban Adventure Center is anticipated to begin once all permits are secured and materials are delivered, with the timeline suggesting a launch in spring 2026. The entire construction process is expected to take around six months.
The Forge, a company experienced in managing adventure centers with 16 locations in the Chicago area, has been proposed to oversee the operations and programming of the Augusta center. Under this arrangement, The Forge will be responsible for staffing, maintenance, legal compliance, and insurance. Furthermore, they will conduct quarterly reporting to the city to ensure transparency and accountability in managing the center’s operations.
The Outdoor Urban Adventure Center is designed to offer a variety of recreational activities, including outdoor classes, races, live music, and special events. The aim is not only to enhance the sporting options in Augusta but also to invigorate community engagement and outdoor lifestyles.
As the city prepares for these exciting developments, discussions are ongoing regarding adequate parking solutions for future visitors. Current proposals include the possibility of adding around 25 parking spots in the marina area, along with public parking options located on Broad Street and in the depot area.
The commission has already initiated the application and permit process required for the center, and as discussions progress, the matter will be forwarded to the full commission for a decisive vote in the upcoming meeting.
This initiative is positioned to not only uplift Augusta’s recreational offerings but also to serve as a flagship attraction that could establish the city as a vibrant outdoor destination in the region.
