Johnny Archer celebrates his victory at Rack Race #12.
Johnny Archer secured a remarkable victory at Rack Race #12 in Augusta, Georgia, going undefeated throughout the tournament. Facing stiff competition and simultaneous events, Archer showcased his exceptional skills and defeated runner-up Jason Stemen twice. With a final match score of 7-3, Archer extended his impressive track record in the billiards community. The competition was aided by fewer top players participating due to another simultaneous event, paving the way for Archer’s success as the thrilling series continues with future tournaments scheduled.
Johnny Archer secured victory at Rack Race #12, which took place from July 5-6 at Rack & Grill II in Augusta, Georgia. Amid stiff competition and simultaneous events, Archer went undefeated throughout the tournament, ultimately claiming the $1,000-added title. The event drew 27 entrants who faced off in a series of intense matches for the championship.
Archer’s performance was particularly noteworthy as he faced runner-up Jason Stemen two times during the tournament—first in the hot seat match and then again in the final. This win adds to Archer’s impressive track record, as he previously defeated Stemen in another tournament earlier in the year. In that April contest, Archer sent Stemen to the loss side before eventually losing the hot seat to Josh Roberts.
The initial rounds of Rack Race #12 highlighted Archer’s formidable skills. He began the tournament with convincing wins against Billy Holmes and Thad Conner, both by scores of 7-2. In the quarterfinal match, Archer faced George Spires, who managed to score four racks against him; however, Archer’s dominance saw him advance nonetheless. Before heading into the hot seat match, Archer’s aggregate score was an impressive 28-9, which only improved as he concluded with a total of 42-17 at the end of the final match. In the hot seat match, he bested Stemen with a score of 7-5.
Stemen’s path to the final also reflected strong performances. He secured his spot by achieving a commanding shutout over Darrel Williams with a decisive 7-0 victory, followed by wins against Ian Jones and Ed Wachs. In the semifinal round, Archer ousted Doug Cogdell, while Stemen eliminated Mike Wise, setting the stage for their final showdown.
The finale culminated with Archer completing his championship run by defeating Stemen 7-3. Given the notable absence of several top players who were competing in the 13th Annual NC State Open 9-Ball Championships in Clemmons, North Carolina—including Josh Roberts, Mike Davis Jr., “Guama” Sanchez, and Tommy Kennedy—the competition at Rack Race #12 was less crowded, granting Archer a clearer pathway to victory.
The event’s success was bolstered by the support of sponsors such as Diamond Billiard Products, DigitalPool.com, and Predator Cues, as highlighted by the tour director, Michael Newsome. These sponsors contribute to the growth and excitement of billiards tournaments across the region.
Looking ahead, the Rack Race series continues with Stop #13 scheduled for July 19 at Rack & Grill III in Aiken, South Carolina, followed by Stop #14 on August 2 back at Rack & Grill II in Augusta. The season will conclude with a grand event featuring a total payout of $24,500, slated for August 14-17 at Rack & Grill III.
As the tournament circuit progresses, competitors and fans alike eagerly anticipate the next matches, fostering a vibrant billiards community with a multitude of opportunities for players to shine.
