The Augusta Commission has given the go-ahead for a new Outdoor Urban Adventure Center featuring a zipline and climbing tower, set to open in 2026. This project aims to revitalize the riverfront area, enhance outdoor recreation, and is supported by SPLOST 8 funding. Managed by The Forge, the center will also focus on accessibility for individuals with disabilities. Community support is strong, and the center is expected to boost local tourism and engagement.
The Augusta Commission has approved plans for an Outdoor Urban Adventure Center that will include a zipline course and an eight-story climbing tower, slated to open in the spring of 2026. This initiative aims to revitalize Augusta’s riverfront area and enhance outdoor recreational activities for residents and visitors.
The project, which was given the green light in a recent commission meeting, will utilize funding from SPLOST 8. Destination Augusta is managing the development of the adventure center, highlighting a vision to create a premier outdoor experience in the region. The center is designed to allow visitors to zip above the scenic Savannah River, providing a thrilling perspective of the natural beauty of Augusta.
Plans for the adventure center include a zipline that will transport adventurers high above the river, and the climbing tower will feature illuminated elements for enhanced visibility at night. Construction of the center is expected to take around six months once materials are delivered, with a review process currently underway by the Army Corps of Engineers and various city departments.
The operations and programming of the adventure center will be handled by The Forge, a company with experience managing 16 similar adventure centers, primarily in the Chicago area. The Forge has also consulted on similar projects and plans to offer a variety of outdoor activities, including classes, races, live music, and special events. The proposed agreement between Augusta and The Forge will be effective until 2030, and The Forge will take on full responsibility for the center’s management, operations, staffing, maintenance, legal compliance, and insurance.
With an estimated cost of $2.95 million, the project is primarily financed through SPLOST 8 funds. Additional support comes from the Georgia Rehabilitation Institute, aiming to make the adventure center accessible to individuals with physical disabilities. Among the considerations, Jennifer Bowen from Destination Augusta is exploring parking options that may include about 25 spots in the marina area, along with additional public parking available on Broad Street and in the depot area.
The Augusta Commission’s Public Service Committee has unanimously endorsed pursuing the proposal for the adventure center. The application and permit process is already in progress, with Bowen also requesting that the commission waive certain building and permit fees associated with the project. This collaborative effort highlights the local government’s commitment to enhancing recreational opportunities in Augusta.
The association with local organizations such as Augusta Tech and Augusta National Golf Club has led to recent improvements at the site, including the laying of new sod in preparation for the adventure center’s development. If permitting by the Corps is expedited, it is possible that the center could be ready to welcome visitors by early 2026.
The establishment of the Outdoor Urban Adventure Center signifies a progressive step toward enriching Augusta’s outdoor offerings. As the project continues to evolve, it is anticipated that it will draw both locals and tourists, fostering community engagement and stimulating the region’s economy through increased outdoor activity and tourism.
