Symbolic representation of justice in Augusta amid rising crime

News Summary

Richard Moore, a 42-year-old from South Carolina, has been convicted of murdering 62-year-old Barry Lew during a violent incident at a local inn. Moore received a life sentence without parole and an additional 15 years for firearm violations. This case highlights the surge in violent crime in the Augusta area, where law enforcement is working diligently to combat rising incidents. Co-defendant Demorea Wallace was also sentenced for his involvement. The Augusta community remains on alert as investigations into other violent crimes continue.

Augusta Man Convicted of Murder, Sentenced to Life in Prison for January 2023 Fatal Shooting

Augusta, Georgia – Richard Moore, a 42-year-old man from Silverstreet, South Carolina, has been found guilty of murder related to the shooting death of 62-year-old Barry Lew. The incident took place on January 8, 2023, at the Suburban Inn on Claussen Road. As a result, Moore has received a life sentence in prison without the possibility of parole, in addition to an extra 15 years for firearm-related charges.

The case, prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Randi Guillory, concluded with Moore’s conviction, reinforcing the legal consequences of violent crime in the Augusta-Richmond County area. In the same case, a co-defendant, 22-year-old Demorea Wallace, pled guilty to aggravated assault and was sentenced to 10 years, with two of those years mandated to be served in confinement.

The significant verdict comes amidst growing concerns over violent crime in the Augusta area, which has experienced an alarming spike in incidents over the past three years. This escalation has resulted in numerous fatalities across the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA).

Background of the Incident

The shooting that led to Moore’s conviction occurred during a violent encounter at the Suburban Inn, a setting that has not been unfamiliar with law enforcement activity. Barry Lew, at the time of his death, was merely in the wrong place at the wrong time, becoming yet another victim in a series of violent incidents plaguing the region.

Following Lew’s tragic death, an autopsy was conducted to determine the cause of death. Tragically, despite immediate emergency response efforts, Lew was pronounced dead shortly after the incident, highlighting the severe implications of gun violence within the community.

Ongoing Investigations

In addition to the Moore case, law enforcement is actively investigating a separate murder involving 20-year-old Camron Jakai Brown. Brown is wanted in connection with the recent shooting death of 28-year-old Raekwon Brinson, who was attacked while standing in the doorway of a convenience store on Barton Chapel Road. Brinson’s injuries were fatal, and he was pronounced dead despite attempts to save him.

Authorities have categorized Brown as armed and dangerous, urging the public to remain vigilant as he is known to frequent the 2300 block of Barton Chapel Road. These ongoing investigations are a part of the broader effort to combat violence and ensure the safety of residents in the Augusta area.

Recent Legal Outcomes in Violent Crime Cases

In a high-profile case earlier this month, Sarah Preddy, 28, was acquitted of murder charges related to the shooting death of her neighbor, Shirley Bush. The tragic incident occurred during a dispute over parking, where Preddy claimed she acted in self-defense after feeling threatened. The jury found her not guilty on all charges, demonstrating the complicated nature of self-defense laws.

Another notable case involves June James, who has been charged with felony murder after the body of 32-year-old Devon Laroyce Shade was discovered in the woods of Augusta. Investigations found that Shade had been shot and left for several days before authorities found him.

In another incident, Levaun Terrell Green Jr. was arrested following accusations of murder for the shooting death of 25-year-old Jerome Burley. As violent crime continues to soar in Richmond County, authorities are aggressively pursuing suspects connected to these crimes, striving to restore safety and justice in the community.

As the legal proceedings evolve, the Augusta-Richmond County area remains on alert, with law enforcement and community members working together to address the rising tide of violence that has affected their neighborhoods.
