John G. Sheffield Jr., a cherished family man from Evans, Georgia, passed away at the age of 72. He was known for his love of nature, family, and his warm personality. With a successful career in the lumber business and a legacy of love and kindness, Sheffield’s impact on the lives around him will be deeply felt. His funeral services are scheduled for July 15, where loved ones can pay their respects.
John G. Sheffield Jr., a beloved Southern gentleman and family man, passed away peacefully at the age of 72 on Saturday, July 12, 2025, at his home in Evans, Georgia, surrounded by his family.
Sheffield was born and raised in Willacoochee, Georgia, where he developed a deep affinity for the outdoors. He often referred to the nearby Alapaha River as “The Nile of Georgia” and cherished the memories forged at Little River Plantation. His affinity for nature underscored his character and influenced his approach to life.
In 1973, Sheffield met his future wife, Diane Riggs, in Atlanta. The couple married later that same year and spent over five decades together. They moved multiple times throughout their lives, ultimately settling in the Augusta area in 1982. In 1983, Sheffield co-founded Riverside Forest Products, where he worked as a lumber broker until his passing.
Sheffield was widely recognized for his signature fedora and his infectious smile. Many who knew him affectionately referred to him as Brummy, The Brum, Daddy John, or Papa. He was known for his affectionate nature and would consistently express love to those around him before parting ways, often concluding conversations with phrases like “I love you to the bone” and a reminder to “be particular.”
Sheffield is survived by his devoted wife, Diane, with whom he shared 52 years of marriage. He was the proud father of two children: a daughter, Heather (Joey) Barrs, who resides in Belize, and a son, Nick (Emily) Sheffield, of Augusta. He was also a grandfather to seven grandchildren: Sophia Barrs, Lillie Sheffield, Lucy Sheffield, Jessica Barrs, Jeffrey Barrs, Mae Sheffield, and Emily Barrs.
In addition to his immediate family, Sheffield is survived by several siblings, including his twin sister, Joan (Hampton) Giddens; brother, Butch (Norma) Kirkland; and sister, Cynthia (Herbert) Haisten. His extended family also includes nieces Jessica Giddens and Jasmine (Tyler) Bell. He was preceded in death by his parents, Aubrey Lee (Paul) Kirkland and John (Lottie) Sheffield Sr.
Funeral services for John G. Sheffield Jr. are scheduled for Tuesday, July 15, 2025, at 3:00 p.m. at Quest Church in Grovetown, Georgia. The family will welcome friends starting at 1:30 p.m. prior to the service, providing an opportunity for loved ones to pay their respects.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to A Better Belize at abetterbelize.org. The arrangements for the services are being handled by Thomas Poteet & Son Funeral Directors, based in Augusta, Georgia.
John G. Sheffield Jr. will be remembered not only for his contributions to his family and career but also for the warmth he brought to those around him. His lasting impact will continue to be felt by all who knew him, particularly through the love and values he instilled in his family.
