A severe thunderstorm that hit the Central Savannah River Area resulted in one death and significant damage. The storm brought heavy rain, strong winds, and lightning, leaving thousands without power. People are urged to seek safety and remain informed of ongoing severe weather risks.
A severe storm that struck the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA) on Saturday night resulted in one death and extensive damage throughout the region. The storm, featuring heavy rain, strong winds, and loud thunder, arrived unexpectedly following a FIRST ALERT issued by meteorologists.
One fatality was reported in Banks County, Georgia, where 56-year-old Jason Keith Payne lost his life after a tree fell onto his vehicle. The Georgia Department of Public Safety confirmed the incident, prompting Georgia Governor Brian Kemp to express condolences and urge prayers for the victim’s family and first responders.
In Aiken County, downed trees obstructed several roads, particularly in the Rapids neighborhood near River Bluff Drive in North Augusta. Additionally, part of a shed was blown into a road, contributing to the damage. At the height of the storm, approximately 4,000 customers of Dominion Energy were without electricity, while Georgia Power reported around 2,000 outages at one point. As a result of the power loss, many patrons at the local Waffle House were left waiting outside.
The National Weather Service (NWS) had issued an updated report for strong thunderstorms that extended until 10:15 p.m. on Saturday night. The storm was characterized by forecasted wind gusts of up to 50 mph, raising concerns regarding falling tree limbs and unsecured items being blown around. The NWS provided alerts for several counties in the area, including Edgefield, Saluda, Lexington, and Aiken, advising residents to seek shelter indoors during the storm.
Following the severe weather, warnings continued into Sunday and Monday, with a slight risk (2 out of 5) of additional severe thunderstorms, particularly featuring damaging winds and large hail.
The aftermath of the storm has underscored the importance of public safety awareness as hurricane season has recently commenced in the region. With lightning striking approximately 25 million times annually in the U.S.—frequently peaking during summer storms—outdoor activities become increasingly hazardous. Residents were reminded of the risks associated with hydroplaning during thunderstorms, prompting discussions about vehicle safety.
In addition to the severe weather alerts, a heat advisory was already in effect prior to the storm, warning of heat index values surpassing 105 degrees Fahrenheit. Local authorities are advising community members to stay hydrated, remain cool, and check on neighbors, especially those who are more vulnerable during periods of extreme heat.
As the CSRA grapples with the aftermath of this significant storm, residents are encouraged to stay informed about weather updates and adhere to safety guidelines, particularly during this active season of both thunderstorms and high temperatures.
