Augusta Animal Shelter Suspends Volunteer Program Amid Liability Concerns

News Summary

The Augusta Animal Shelter has temporarily suspended its volunteer program due to rising liability concerns linked to off-site activities. This decision could impact adoption events and the shelter’s operations, as volunteers play a vital role in facilitating these activities. City officials are addressing safety and financial implications while maintaining a high save rate for the animals in care. Efforts are underway to improve communication between volunteers and city leaders to find workable solutions amid these challenges.

Augusta – The Augusta Animal Shelter has announced a temporary suspension of its volunteer program, limiting volunteers’ ability to take animals off-site amidst rising liability concerns. This decision comes as the city grapples with potential financial implications linked to off-site volunteer activities. The city’s move is primarily to address safety concerns regarding animals possibly becoming public hazards when outside the shelter environment.

North Augusta attorney Kelly Zier has highlighted the potential for the city to face liability claims amounting to up to $2 million should any incidents arise from a volunteer’s decisions regarding shelter animals. These serious concerns have prompted city officials to suspend the practice, leaving volunteers feeling sidelined and concerned about the impact on adoption events, veterinary visits, and foster programs.

Despite the setback, the shelter maintains a commendable 97% save rate for the animals in its care, without any euthanizations over the past three years due to space issues. City officials and volunteers alike are worried that continued restrictions could affect this success rate moving forward.

Currently, Riddick, a ten-week-old pit bull puppy, is waiting for a permanent home, and his brother Shaft is also available for adoption. Their sisters, Xena, Furiosa, and Ripley, will be ready for adoption starting this upcoming Friday. To encourage adoptions in light of the current restrictions, the Augusta Animal Shelter has announced it will extend its hours for a special “Save-a-Pet” Monday event. All dogs and puppies at this event will be available for an adoption fee of just $20.

The temporary suspension affects not only adoption events but also hampers the funding and operations of the shelter. Volunteers had been instrumental in facilitating these events, which are critical for placing animals into loving homes and reducing the population within the shelter. Furthermore, discussions are ongoing regarding possible amendments to the city’s animal control ordinance aimed at reducing liability risks while ensuring the welfare of the animals.

Local leaders are recognizing the necessity of enhancing communication between volunteers and city officials to facilitate collaboration on important matters impacting animal welfare. City Council member Dennis Briatico has been actively involved in shelter operations and recognizes that clearer lines of communication could positively affect decision-making that influences the welfare of the animals.

As the city navigates these legal challenges, both staff and volunteers remain hopeful that solutions will emerge to mitigate liability concerns, allowing them to continue their important work in rescuing and rehoming animals. The Augusta Animal Shelter is located at 4164 Mack Lane and continues to strive for a positive outcome for its animal residents.

As of the latest weather forecast for Augusta on Aug. 16, 2025, conditions are predicted to be partly cloudy with a high of 92°F and a low of 74°F. Possible stray showers or thunderstorms are also expected, though city residents are encouraged to visit the shelter to consider adopting a new furry companion.
