Renovation work at Doctors Hospital of Augusta

News Summary

Doctors Hospital of Augusta has appointed Andrew Bedi as its new Chief Operating Officer. With nearly 20 years of experience in HCA Healthcare, Bedi’s expertise is expected to drive significant growth as the hospital invests over $150 million in renovations and expansions. Key projects include a new free-standing emergency room and the establishment of Graduate Medical Education programs to address the shortage of healthcare professionals in Georgia.

Augusta, Georgia – Doctors Hospital of Augusta has selected Andrew Bedi as its new Chief Operating Officer.

Bedi brings nearly 20 years of experience within HCA Healthcare, Inc., highlighting his extensive background at a time when the hospital is poised for significant growth and development. Joanna Conley, the CEO of Doctors Hospital, expressed enthusiasm about Bedi’s appointment, emphasizing how his expertise will contribute to the hospital’s trajectory.

Major Developments in Healthcare Services

Doctors Hospital is currently investing over $150 million in a series of renovations and enhancements aimed at expanding its healthcare services. A significant portion of this budget, approximately $6.7 million, is earmarked for new Graduate Medical Education programs. This initiative is a response to Georgia’s pressing health professional shortage, which is projected to reach a deficit of more than 8,000 physicians by the year 2030.

Additionally, the hospital plans to undertake an $86.5 million two-floor vertical expansion. This expansion includes the renovation of the third floor of the Burn Tower and the fourth floor of the South Tower, further augmenting patient care facilities.

New Free-Standing Emergency Room

As part of its development strategy, Doctors Hospital is constructing a new free-standing emergency room at 464 N. Belair Road in Evans, Georgia, on a site that was previously home to Fatz Southern Kitchen until its closure in 2019. This new facility will cover 10,860 square feet and will house 11 treatment rooms equipped with advanced CT and X-ray capabilities, as well as laboratory and pharmacy services. The emergency room is expected to open by fall 2025 and will include 10 emergency beds and one trauma room.

The targeted completion for the emergency room, from the start of construction, is within 10 to 12 months, aiming for a late 2025 finish. This strategic location is particularly beneficial for residents of Columbia County, who currently rely on Doctors Hospital’s services from Augusta, thereby allowing for quicker access to emergency care.

Overall Investment and Facility Upgrades

In addition to the construction of the new emergency room, Doctors Hospital is allocating $41.8 million towards equipment upgrades. These enhancements will cover patient care units and surgical facilities, ensuring that the hospital continues to meet the growing demands of the community. Improvements also extend to the main hospital cafeteria and the establishment of hybrid operating rooms, which will further enhance operational efficiency and patient experiences.

Background Context

The healthcare landscape in Georgia is facing a significant challenge, particularly with the outflow of medical professionals. Data indicates that approximately one-third of medical students from Georgia who secure residency positions end up practicing in other states. This trend underscores the importance of cultivating local training programs, which the new Graduate Medical Education initiative aims to address.

Andrew Bedi’s new role as COO comes at a crucial time, as Doctors Hospital aims to navigate this evolving landscape by enhancing its services and facilities to better serve both patients and healthcare professionals in the region.
