Renovation and expansion at Doctors Hospital of Augusta

News Summary

Doctors Hospital of Augusta has announced the appointment of Andrew Bedi as Chief Operating Officer. With nearly 20 years of experience in healthcare, Bedi is expected to lead the hospital’s expansion efforts and service enhancements. Joanna Conley, the hospital’s CEO, expressed optimism about Bedi’s leadership during a critical growth phase. The hospital is undergoing significant renovations and expansions, investing over $150 million to address the increasing healthcare needs of the community.

Augusta, Georgia – Doctors Hospital of Augusta has appointed Andrew Bedi as its new Chief Operating Officer. With nearly two decades of experience within the HCA Healthcare system, Bedi is set to play a pivotal role in the hospital’s expansion and service enhancement initiatives.

Joanna Conley, the hospital’s CEO, expressed enthusiasm regarding Bedi’s extensive background, emphasizing that his leadership comes at a critical time for the facility, which is currently embracing significant growth. Bedi’s appointment aligns with the hospital’s objective to enhance services for the community amid its ongoing development projects.

Bedi commenced his career in the healthcare industry as a lead financial analyst in Nashville. He has progressively taken on more complex roles, having previously served as the Associate COO at TriStar Centennial Medical Center, after which he became the COO at TriStar Greenview Regional Hospital. His most recent position was as CEO at Logan Memorial Hospital in Russellville, Kentucky. During his tenure there, he successfully led the hospital through acquisition and significant expansion, which included the launch of southern Kentucky’s first dedicated wound care center.

Doctors Hospital of Augusta is currently investing over $150 million in renovations and expansions to modernize facilities and address the growing healthcare needs of the community. Part of this investment is focused on developing Graduate Medical Education (GME) programs aimed at resolving Georgia’s forecasted shortage of healthcare professionals. This shortage is projected to exceed 8,000 physicians by the year 2030.

The expansion plans include a substantial $86.5 million investment for a two-floor vertical expansion and renovation, particularly for the Burn Tower and South Tower. Additionally, a new freestanding emergency room is set to be constructed in Evans, expected to open in Fall 2025, featuring 11 treatment rooms and advanced imaging capabilities to better serve the community’s urgent care needs.

In conjunction with these developments, Doctors Hospital plans to allocate $41.8 million for necessary equipment upgrades and onsite building improvements, including a new hybrid operating room to enhance surgical capabilities.

The hospital’s growth plans come as approximately one-third of medical students who fill residency slots in Georgia often choose to practice in other states after completing their training. By expanding its medical training programs, Doctors Hospital of Augusta aims to encourage more graduates to remain in the state, ultimately contributing to alleviating the anticipated physician shortage.

Bedi’s educational background includes a Bachelor’s degree in Finance from the University of Tennessee and dual Master’s degrees in Health Administration and Business Administration from the University of St. Francis. His combination of financial acumen and healthcare administration expertise positions him well to drive Doctors Hospital’s initiatives in improving community health outcomes and expanding its operational capacity.

The ongoing efforts at Doctors Hospital of Augusta signify a commitment not only to enhancing the quality of care available to the community but also to fostering a sustainable healthcare workforce that can address emerging healthcare challenges in the region.
