News Summary

Aiken County has been hit hard by severe thunderstorms this week, resulting in strong wind gusts and significant power outages. The National Weather Service issued warnings as storms brought gusts of up to 60 mph and heavy rainfall impacting several areas, including Aiken and North Augusta. Motorists faced disruptions on major highways, and many residents were urged to seek shelter indoors. The aftermath left thousands without power and prompted warnings for potential further severe weather over the weekend.

Aiken County Faces Severe Thunderstorms and Dangerous Conditions

It’s been a whirlwind of weather in Aiken County this week! On Monday night, the skies opened up and brought some serious thunderstorms that left residents reeling. The National Weather Service issued a warning around 6:14 p.m., alerting everyone to prepare for wind gusts reaching up to 55 mph. This storm was making its way southeast at 15 mph, and Doppler radar was hot on its trail!

Areas Affected

Residents in a wide range of areas felt the impact of the storm, including Aiken, North Augusta, and even the bustling Aiken Mall. Other spots like Clearwater, Belvedere, and Martinez faced significant threats. If you live in cities like Glendale, Midtown, Summerville, or close to the famous Augusta National Golf Club, you likely noticed the storm howling by!

Even major highways weren’t spared, with Interstate 20 in both Georgia and South Carolina seeing disruptions. Motorists traveling between mile markers 199 and 201 in Georgia, and from 0 to 15 in South Carolina, needed to be extra cautious.

Guidelines for Safety

With torrents of rain pounding down and gusty winds knocking down branches and blowing around unsecured items, the NWS reminded everyone to seek shelter indoors. Flood warnings rang out, emphasizing the dangers of driving through flooded roads. In fact, it’s a real hazard that could lead to hydroplaning, where your vehicle could slide uncontrollably on wet roads.

Yes, the lightning was fierce too! Frequent strikes were reported, with bolts capable of reaching up to 10 miles away from the storm. Lightning is no joke, as it hits the U.S. about 25 million times each year and causes around 20 fatalities annually. It’s vital to stay alert when storms roll in!

Wednesday’s Warnings

60 mph, with quarter-sized hail causing concern for those around the Aiken Municipal Airport. Isn’t it something how quickly the weather can change?

Lexington, Red Bank, and Pelion were just a few of the other areas impacted by this turbulence. Once again, travelers were warned about the risks on Interstate 20 in South Carolina between mile markers 15 to 31.

Power Outages and Aftermath

After all the storm action, Aiken County faced significant outages, with about 4,000 Dominion Energy customers waking up in the dark. Not to be outdone, nearly 2,000 customers of Georgia Power in Augusta also experienced blackouts. It’s certainly been quite a few days for those in the area.

The community pulled together as Georgia’s governor reflected on the impacts and shared condolences following a tragic fatality in Banks County, Georgia, caused by a falling tree during the storms.

And hold onto your hats, folks! There’s also a “FIRST ALERT” in effect, signaling the potential for further severe weather over the weekend. Damaging winds and large hail could make another appearance. Make sure your loved ones are safe, and keep your eyes on the skies!

So remember, Aiken County residents, it’s best to stay indoors and stay informed. Weather like this can certainly rattle nerves but staying prepared can help you ride out the storm!
