A Celebration of Life gathering in honor of Clara will be held on July 19, 2025, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Thomas Poteet & Son Funeral Directors in Augusta. Friends, family, and community members are invited to attend and celebrate Clara’s impactful life. Her family requests attendees to wear casual attire, reflecting the spirit of Clara’s warm and approachable nature. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Clara’s memory as a tribute to her charitable spirit.

Clara was born on May 11, 1947, in Augusta, Georgia. She graduated from the Academy of Richmond County in 1965 before continuing her education at Winthrop University. She later graduated from Augusta College with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, demonstrating her lifelong dedication to learning. Clara pursued further studies at Georgia Southern College, where she earned her Master of Education and Specialist degrees, equipping her for a successful teaching career.

Spending over 30 years in education, Clara positively impacted the lives of countless students across multiple counties and school districts in Georgia. Her passion for teaching extended beyond mathematics; it encompassed mentoring and encouraging her students to reach their full potential. Clara’s colleagues and students alike cherished her dedication, patience, and the genuine interest she had in their well-being.

Clara married Daniel Monroe McAlhany, Jr. in 1969, forming a partnership that lasted 56 years. Together, they raised two children, Daniel Monroe McAlhany III and Dana McAlhany Hutcherson. Clara was a proud grandmother to Daniel Novak McAlhany, and she was also known for her love of animals, particularly her cherished dog named Pops and her “grand dogs” Clark, Nash, and Rebel.

A devoted member of First Baptist Church Augusta, Clara lived her life in service to her faith, consistently sharing the message of Jesus with those around her. Her warmth and compassion extended beyond her family to her broader community. Clara was actively involved in various church activities, dedicating her time and resources to uplift others.

Clara’s legacy is one of kindness and dedication—traits that not only defined her career but also shaped her personal relationships. She was a friend to many, often taking time to cherish moments with those she loved. Her life serves as a testament to the impact one person can have through simple acts of kindness throughout a lifetime.

The family hopes that those who attend the Celebration of Life gathering will share their own memories and stories of Clara, highlighting the affection and respect she cultivated over her many years in Augusta.
