Augusta Community Remembers Edwin Latimer Douglass, Jr. (Edo) with Heartfelt Memorial Service

The lovely town of Augusta came together recently to celebrate the extraordinary life of a beloved local figure, Edwin Latimer Douglass, Jr. (fondly known as Edo), who passed away peacefully on July 25, 2025, at the age of 91. Surrounded by his loving family, Edo’s departure marks a significant loss for the community that cherished him.

A Family Man and Community Leader

Edo was dearly loved by his wife of an incredible 64 years, Mary Anne Lindgren Douglass. Their enduring partnership stands as a testament to their deep affection and commitment, embodying what many view as the ideal marital bond. Edo was born on May 25, 1934, in our very own Augusta, to Mildred Garrett Douglass and Edwin Latimer Douglass. As a proud grandson of T. Harry Garrett, a respected educator in Augusta, it seems that the apple truly didn’t fall far from the tree!

Education and Military Service

With a passion for learning, Edo graduated from Richmond Academy before moving on to Davidson College, where he not only excelled academically but also made lasting friendships as a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity. His time at Davidson was notable, as he participated in the ROTC program and was also a proud member of the men’s golf team. His remarkable contributions to the college were highlighted when he received the Distinguished Alumni Service Award in 2005.

Graduating in 1955 with a B.A. in Economics, Edo was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. His service took him to Seoul, South Korea, where he had the esteemed role of personal aide-de-camp to General William Fitzsche, commander of the 25th Army Infantry Division. This early chapter of his life set the stage for the considerable leadership roles that would follow.

A Life of Entrepreneurship

After serving his country, Edo became a well-known businessman and entrepreneur in the CSRA. He owned an impressive range of companies, including the Augusta Hardwood Lumber Co., Augusta Truck Sales, Phoenix Oil Co., Bennett Gas Co., Dixie Ice, and Radio Cab. For over 50 years, he served as president of Glynn Farms Inc., making a lasting impact on local industries and economies.

Edo’s leadership extended beyond business; he held significant positions within various organizations, including president of the Southern Hardwood Lumber Association and the Augusta Country Club. As a dedicated supporter of youth development, he was also a prominent figure with the Georgia-Carolina Boy Scouts of America, where he received the Silver Beaver Award for his outstanding contributions.

A Heart for Community Involvement

Throughout his life, Edo recognized the importance of giving back. He served on numerous boards, making invaluable contributions to institutions like Augusta Preparatory Day School, First National Bank, First Union Bank, and the Georgia Chamber of Commerce. He was deeply involved with Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church, where he was a third-generation member and Elder.

His affinity for the sport of golf led him to join various local clubs, including the Augusta Assembly, Heritage Club, Augusta Golf Association, Sea Island Club, Ocean Forest Golf Club, and Augusta National Golf Club. His commitment to Augusta’s culture and traditions made him a well-respected figure.

Honoring a Legacy

Edo is survived by his daughter Anne D. King (Michael), son Edwin L. Douglass, III (Danny), and five grandchildren: Will King (Addy), Anne Maxwell Douglass, Lucy D. Kelly (John), Edo Douglass IV (Elizabeth), and Margaret Douglass, along with one adorable great-grandchild, George King.

A memorial service to honor Edmund will be held at Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church on July 29, 2025, at 11:00 am. Friends and family are invited to gather in the church’s Congregational Life Center an hour prior to the service for a time of remembrance and fellowship.

As part of the heartfelt celebration, honorary pallbearers will be members of the Augusta Golf Association. Following the service, a reception will provide the opportunity for family and out-of-town guests to connect in the Congregational Life Center.

If you would like to honor Edo’s memory further, the family requests donations be made to Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church or to The Augusta Golf Team through the AU Birdie Club. Checks for the Augusta University Foundation can be made payable with AU Birdie Club Fund #298000 in the memo section.

As the community reflects on the life and contributions of Edwin Latimer Douglass, Jr., it’s clear that his legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of those who knew and loved him.
