Augusta, Georgia – Nine individuals have been charged with murder following a violent brawl that erupted from a dispute between two high school girls. The incident, which escalated into a large altercation involving weapons, resulted in the death of 18-year-old Demajhay Bell, who died from a stab wound to the neck.
The altercation occurred on a street in a neighborhood outside Augusta last Friday. According to the local sheriff’s office, the brawl involved a mob of up to 50 people, many of whom were armed with baseball bats, knives, and other weapons. Eyvette Byrd, the mother of one of the girls involved in the dispute, reported that a large crowd gathered at her home to engage in the fight.
Sheriff Richard Roundtree characterized Bell’s death as “one of the most senseless murders” he has seen and has called for the community to take a firm stance against violence. Bell was reportedly a bystander during the fight and was injured after being accidentally struck by a friend who was trying to target someone else. The friend had previously suffered a broken arm during the brawl, which intensified as it went on.
The origins of the fight can be traced back to a conflict at Glen Hills High School over an issue involving a boy and some provocative photos. Although school officials attempted to deescalate the situation, the conflict continued to develop over social media and text messaging. Video footage from the scene captured the chaos of the brawl, including moments where a Dodge Charger was struck by a bat, and calls for help could be heard as Bell collapsed, clutching his neck.
After being stabbed, Bell tried to escape the scene and signaled for help when he spotted a police officer nearby. Unfortunately, by the time he received medical attention, he had already lost a significant amount of blood, leading to a tragic outcome.
Demetrius Lamont Harris Jr., 21, has been identified as the individual accused of stabbing Bell. The other suspects, ranging in age from 18 to 39, have been charged with aggravated assault and felony murder. Under Georgia law, felony murder applies to any death that occurs during the commission of another felony, and it carries an automatic life sentence.
The nine suspects include Quiasha Henley, 18; A’Lexis Cain, 18; Tyteanna Thomas, 18; Raheem Jobes, 19; Myah Dunbar, 18; Terry Lee Daniels, 19; and two others aged 35 and 39. At this time, it is unclear how many of the suspects have obtained legal representation. Cheryl Karounos, a spokesperson, confirmed that her office is representing one of the suspects, Quiauna Henley, but did not provide further details on the case.
This tragic incident highlights the pressing issue of youth violence and its devastating consequences. Community leaders and law enforcement officials are urging residents to engage in proactive measures to prevent future occurrences and to support initiatives targeting violence in the community.
As the investigation continues, authorities will strive to provide justice for Demajhay Bell and his family while examining the factors that led to this alarming outbreak of violence.
