Children participating in reading activities at RISE Augusta

News Summary

RISE Augusta is facing a critical shortage of tutors as students in kindergarten through fifth grade prepare for the new school year. Despite serving many children in need, approximately 100 students remain on a waitlist for after-school tutoring. With only 25% of participants reading at grade level, the organization is seeking community volunteers to bridge the gap, stressing the importance of early intervention for literacy and academic success. The upcoming school year intensifies the urgency for recruitment and resources to support local students.

Augusta – RISE Augusta is facing a significant tutor shortage as students in kindergarten through fifth grade prepare to return to school next week. This shortage is particularly concerning for children in Richmond, Columbia, and McDuffie counties, as it has been exacerbated by the increasing number of students seeking academic support. Without sufficient tutoring resources, many children are at risk of falling further behind in their education.

As of now, approximately 100 students are on the waitlist for after-school tutoring at RISE Augusta. The organization’s STRIVE Director has indicated that many of these children are one or two grade levels behind in their studies. Alarmingly, only about 25% of the students served by RISE Augusta are currently reading at grade level, highlighting a pressing need for immediate educational intervention.

To combat this issue, initiatives such as the Harris Literacy Center are helping students improve their reading skills and address the impacts of the summer slide. Early intervention is deemed crucial by tutors, especially for students prior to reaching third grade. Encouragement and support play vital roles in fostering a love for reading, which can significantly enhance literacy rates and academic performance.

Currently, RISE Augusta serves between 30 and 60 children at each Richmond County school participating in their program, but the limited number of available tutors poses challenges in meeting the needs of these students. RISE Augusta has established a substantial impact by distributing around 41,000 books annually to promote literacy; however, the necessity for donations remains vital to support their mission further.

The organization emphasizes that education is a pathway out of poverty, which makes literacy a foundational component of future success for these children. Community involvement is crucial in improving students’ lives and enhancing educational opportunities within the region. RISE Augusta is actively seeking volunteers to assist with tutoring and support, highlighting the critical role that community engagement plays in addressing educational gaps.

As the new school year approaches, the urgency to recruit volunteers and secure resources is more important than ever. By doing so, RISE Augusta hopes to provide the necessary support for students to catch up academically and avoid falling behind further. The lack of available tutors remains a significant barrier to achieving these educational goals.

In a related note, the Georgia Lottery recently announced that players from Tennille and Augusta each won $10,000 from the “Fishing for Gold” Diggi game, highlighting the potential for increased community investment. Such community resources can significantly contribute to stakeholders like RISE Augusta in mitigating the challenges faced by local students.

With the school year looming, RISE Augusta continues its call for help to bridge the tutoring gap and ensure that every child receives the support they require to succeed in their educational journey.
