The Port of Brunswick has become the leading U.S. port for automotive shipping.
The Port of Brunswick’s Colonel’s Island Terminal has been recognized as the premier U.S. port for automotive and heavy equipment shipping. The port processed over 2 million tons of Roll-on/Roll-off cargo, showing significant increases in automotive and heavy equipment transport. With substantial improvements and expansion plans underway, the Port of Brunswick continues to enhance its capabilities to meet growing market demands, outpacing competitors and attracting automotive manufacturers from neighboring ports.
Brunswick, Georgia – The Port of Brunswick’s Colonel’s Island Terminal has been recognized as the premier port in the United States for the shipping of automotive and heavy equipment in 2024. This significant achievement is attributed to the port processing over 2 million tons of Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) cargo, including 901,912 units of automobiles and heavy equipment, marking a notable 13.3% increase in automotive cargo and a staggering 160% increase in heavy equipment transport compared to previous years.
The Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) has been instrumental in this development, completing $262 million worth of improvements at the Port of Brunswick during 2024. These enhancements include the addition of new warehousing facilities and an expansion of 122 acres dedicated to RoRo cargo storage, allowing the port to meet the growing demand for automotive shipping.
In a competitive landscape, the Port of Brunswick secured its position as the top U.S. port for RoRo exports, achieving 600,000 tons in this category in 2024. Similar growth trends have been observed in the local market, with auto exports rising by 9% and imports up by 20% in the same year. This surge in trade is attributed to a combination of strong market demands and strategic infrastructure investments that have made the Port of Brunswick more appealing to automotive manufacturers, who are increasingly shifting their business from neighboring ports such as Charleston, South Carolina, and Jacksonville, Florida.
To further bolster its capabilities, the Port of Brunswick is undertaking a comprehensive expansion plan that includes a new railyard project. This initiative is set to triple the rail capacity from approximately 150,000 automobiles to over 590,000 by mid-2025, with Phase I of the project expected to enhance annual capacity to 340,000 vehicles.
Additionally, the port has plans to construct a new RoRo berth commencing in Summer 2025, with an anticipated completion date in 2027. This new facility will be designed to accommodate larger vessels that can carry over 10,800 car equivalent units, thus further enhancing the port’s ability to service larger shipping demands.
Moreover, substantial investments have been allocated for ongoing harbor improvements. The state of Georgia has set aside over $6 million for these enhancements, and the U.S. Congress has approved nearly $38 million for necessary upgrades, including dredging projects aimed at restoring authorized harbor depths.
The recent growth experienced by the Port of Brunswick not only strengthens its standing against competitive ports, such as the Port of Baltimore, but it also comes at a time when the latter faces challenges, including an 11% decline in automobiles shipped due to the impacts of the Francis Scott Key Bridge’s collapse on shipping operations.
Strategic partnerships have played a crucial role in the Port of Brunswick’s success. A notable agreement with Wallenius Wilhelmsen, focusing on consolidating logistics operations, has significantly contributed to the port’s robust growth. Additionally, the ongoing redevelopment of Savannah’s Ocean Terminal is projected to add 1.5 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of annual capacity while improving traffic safety through new infrastructure initiatives.
The developments at the Port of Brunswick are indicative of a broader trend in the U.S. shipping and logistics landscape, showcasing the critical role of infrastructure investment and strategic partnerships in enabling ports to adapt to increasing cargo demands and competitive pressures.
