News Summary

The second round of the Masters tournament in Augusta, Georgia, is under threat from an impending weather system bringing scattered showers and cooler temperatures. Meteorologists have identified the weather pattern as a ‘wedge’ that could lead to a rainy weekend, raising concerns for players and fans alike. With thunderstorms forecasted and a flood warning in effect, the conditions could significantly impact the tournament schedule. While the first round weather was favorable, uncertainty looms as rain and potentially severe weather may disrupt play in the coming days.

Augusta, Georgia – The second round of the 89th Masters at Augusta National is under significant threat due to an impending weather system that is expected to bring scattered showers and cooler temperatures this evening and into Sunday. Meteorologists have identified this weather pattern as a “wedge,” where high pressure from the north creates a cool and dry northeasterly breeze but is countered by a warm and moist flow from the southwest. As a result, the forecast suggests a cloudy and wet pattern for Sunday and Monday.

The forecast indicates that rain will be likely, with high temperatures climbing into the upper 70s on both Sunday and Monday. However, the cooler temperatures will prevail during the overnight hours and will also affect the conditions for the Masters tournament. By Tuesday and Wednesday, the wedge pattern is expected to dissipate, leading to continued rain chances through Friday as elevated moisture lingers, with highs expected in the middle to upper 80s.

On Friday morning, thunderstorms are forecasted to roll into Augusta around midnight, with rain chances ranging from 50% to 65% through the early hours. An additional line of storms may hit the area around 4 a.m., increasing rain chances to approximately 64%. The final chance for rain is projected at 9 a.m. Friday, coinciding with the early tee times for golfers participating in the tournament.

Winds are also expected to pick up throughout Friday, reaching steady speeds of 20 mph by the afternoon hours. The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning for parts of western Virginia, including Augusta County, due to excessive rainfall. This flood warning is active from 3:40 p.m. to 6:45 p.m., with small stream flooding anticipated in areas such as Greenville, Middlebrook, and Spottswood. Rainfall totals of 1 to 2 inches have already been recorded in these regions, with an additional 0.25 to 0.50 inches still possible.

In contrast to the challenging forecasts for the upcoming days, the Masters began under favorable weather conditions, with only a 5% chance of rain reported during the first round. The golf events leading up to the Masters, including practice rounds and the Par 3 Contest, have concluded without interruption, allowing players to prepare for the prestigious tournament.

The Masters tournament is known for its rich history and is one of the most anticipated events in professional golf. With coverage available on ESPN and streaming options through Fubo, spectators can follow the tournament as the rounds unfold. The first round started at 7:30 a.m. and aired on television from 3 to 7:30 p.m., showcasing the skill and talent of the world’s best golfers.

As weather-related delays can occur during the tournament, particularly due to lightning, players and patrons may be evacuated from the course if necessary. Last year’s Masters faced a substantial delay of 2.5 hours on the first day due to rain, which underscores the importance of closely monitoring weather forecasts going forward.

Looking ahead to the weekend, the forecast predicts sunshine and light northwest winds for Saturday, with a high of 65 degrees. Sunday is expected to be sunny as well, with temperatures rising to a high of 71 degrees and light northwest winds. However, the threat of rain looms on the horizon, creating uncertainty for both players and fans alike regarding the continuation of the tournament under optimal playing conditions.
