Flooded road surrounded by trees in Central South Carolina

News Summary

A Flood Advisory is in effect for parts of central South Carolina, including Edgefield, Newberry, and Saluda counties, due to heavy rainfall causing potential minor flooding. Additionally, a Flash Flood Warning has been issued for Central McCormick County as rainfall totals reach 3 to 4.5 inches. Residents are advised to stay alert for flooding, especially on roadways. A similar advisory is also in place for east central Georgia, where rain accumulations could lead to significant runoff and additional flooding. Public safety is emphasized as residents are urged to avoid flooded areas.

Columbia, SC – A Flood Advisory is currently in effect until 10:15 AM EDT for parts of central South Carolina, which includes Edgefield, Newberry, and Saluda counties. Residents in these areas should be aware of the potential for minor flooding caused by excessive rainfall.

Heavy rainfall has been detected by Doppler radar, with totals ranging from 1 to 2.5 inches since early this morning. The forecast indicates that an additional 1 to 2 inches of rain is expected, which can lead to minor flooding in low-lying and poorly drained areas. Water accumulation is anticipated to create hazards over roadways, particularly affecting Interstate 26 between mile markers 62 and 79.

The advisory highlights specific locations at risk, including Newberry, Edgefield, Saluda, Whitmire, Prosperity, Newberry College, Newberry County Airport, and Blair, among others. Residents are urged to stay alert for further developments and take precautions, especially if driving, due to the high likelihood of flooded roads.

Flash Flood Warning in Effect

A Flash Flood Warning has also been extended for Central McCormick County until 9:30 AM EDT, where rainfall has reached between 3 to 4.5 inches. Flash flooding is either occurring or expected due to continued heavy rain, with specific hazards impacting small creeks, urban areas, highways, streets, and underpasses. Key locations anticipating flash flooding include McCormick, McCormick County Airport, Plum Branch, Whitetown, and Hawe Creek Campground.

Impacts on East Central Georgia

In addition to South Carolina, a Flood Advisory has been issued for parts of east central Georgia, covering Columbia, Lincoln, and McDuffie counties until 10:15 AM EDT. Rainfall observed in this advisory area ranges between 2 to 4 inches, with an additional 1 to 2 inches forecasted. Locations in Georgia at risk for flooding include Lincolnton, Elijah Clark State Park, and various parks and campgrounds.

Public Safety and Precautions

Residents in affected areas are advised against driving on flooded roads and should report any flooding incidents to the National Weather Service when it is safe to do so. The National Weather Service has also issued a Flood Watch that remains in effect through this evening across multiple counties in Georgia. This watch indicates the potential for excessive runoff that may lead to additional flooding.

Weather Outlook

A very moist airmass is anticipated to linger in the region, which means numerous rounds of showers and thunderstorms are expected throughout the day. Residents are encouraged to keep an eye on weather forecasts for updates on conditions and possible further warnings. It is essential for those living in susceptible areas to remain prepared to take action should flooding develop.

The combination of significant rainfall and additional forecasted precipitation calls for heightened awareness and readiness among residents in these regions. Authorities will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary.
