The interim superintendent highlighted advancements in the College and Career Ready Performance Index, showcasing the dedication of students, teachers, and families. As families prepare for the next academic year, applications for specialized programs are now open. Additionally, Augusta University is enhancing mental health resources for students, aligning with better educational outcomes in the community.

Richmond – More than 13,000 students in the Richmond County School System took part in the Georgia Milestones assessments during the 2024-2025 school year, showing significant academic improvement across all grade levels. Interim Superintendent Dr. Malinda Cobb announced that students in elementary, middle, and high schools made strides in key subjects including Algebra I, American Literature, and Biology, reflecting the dedication of students, teachers, school leaders, and families.

The Georgia Milestones assessments, administered each spring, aim to evaluate proficiency in core subjects such as English language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies for students in grades 3-8 and high school. These assessments provide educators with essential insights into student readiness for the subsequent academic level.

In addition to the Milestones results, the Richmond County School System has shown improvements in all areas of the College and Career Ready Performance Index (CCRPI), which measures academic achievement and preparedness for higher education or career paths. Notably, the Richmond County schools recorded substantial growth in the ‘Closing Gaps’ category, achieving average increases of 21% for both elementary and middle schools and an impressive 40% for high schools.

As families prepare for the upcoming academic year, applications for magnet schools and specialized programs within the Richmond County School System for the 2025-2026 school year are now available. Key highlights from the 2024 CCRPI report include advancements in Content Mastery, Progress, Readiness, and Graduation Rate, further indicating a positive trend in local educational performance.

In a related development, Augusta University has launched a new program focused on enhancing mental health resources for students in public schools, emphasizing the importance of well-being in academic success. This initiative aligns with the positive outcomes of the recent Milestones assessments, as the Georgia Department of Education announced that scores from the 2023-2024 academic year showed improvement or stability in 10 of 13 subjects assessed.

Georgia Superintendent Richard Woods commended the continuous enhancements in student performance, indicating the positive trajectory of educational outcomes statewide. While the Milestones math scores for the current year are to be released later this fall, Georgia schools exhibit promising trends in reading proficiency, with various Augusta-area schools ranking in the higher 95th percentile.

However, it is important to note that some Richmond County schools fall within the lower percentiles for reading and other subjects, highlighting areas that still require attention and improvement. In the broader community, the Atlanta United Community Fund marked the grand opening of two new soccer fields for Augusta Arsenal, which will benefit local youth soccer programs significantly.

The GA 100 initiative is also underway, aiming to construct up to 100 mini-soccer pitches in underserved communities throughout Georgia. This program has issued matching grants to facilitate the construction of soccer fields, enhancing young players’ access to the sport. Augusta Arsenal, which has over 30 teams ranging from U-9 to U-19, is actively collaborating with local organizations to promote youth soccer, underscoring the commitment to providing opportunities for community engagement through sports.

As the Richmond County School System continues to improve and adapt to the needs of its students and community, it remains focused on fostering an environment conducive to learning and developing skills that prepare students for successful futures.
