News Summary

Three Georgia residents have been charged with fraud for allegedly obtaining nearly $2 million from COVID-19 relief programs. The defendants are accused of misusing the Paycheck Protection Program and Economic Injury Disaster Loans by submitting false documents and manipulating bank accounts to launder the funds. With 38 counts of bank fraud, wire fraud, and money laundering, this case highlights ongoing efforts by authorities to combat fraud against pandemic relief initiatives, ensuring support reaches those truly in need.

Atlanta, GA – Three residents of Georgia have been charged with federal offenses related to fraudulently obtaining nearly $2 million from COVID-19 relief programs. Salimot Akande (41, Atlanta), Garey Henderson (45, Marietta), and Jacqueline Rollizo (52, Woodstock) were arraigned on multiple counts including fraud and money laundering. These charges stem from allegedly exploiting pandemic relief efforts intended to support small businesses during a time of unprecedented economic distress.

The indictment reveals that the trio allegedly defrauded several COVID-19 relief programs on multiple occasions. They managed to obtain approximately $1.6 million through fraudulent Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans for seven businesses. To secure this funding, the defendants are accused of submitting fabricated tax documents and false loan applications to lenders.

In addition to the PPP loans, both Akande and Henderson reportedly acquired fraudulent Economic Injury Disaster Loans (EIDL). Specifically, Akande’s business secured a $48,900 EIDL loan, while Henderson’s businesses received a total of $299,800. Once they obtained the loan proceeds, the defendants allegedly moved the money through numerous bank accounts to obscure its origins, an action typically used in money laundering.

The total indictment includes 38 counts, consisting of bank fraud, wire fraud, and numerous money laundering charges. As with all defendants, Akande, Henderson, and Rollizo are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.

The investigation into the fraudulent activities is being conducted by Homeland Security Investigations and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The prosecution will be led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah E. Klapman.

Context of the Charges

This case is part of a broader effort by the Department of Justice to combat fraud related to COVID-19 relief programs. The COVID-19 Fraud Enforcement Task Force was established on May 17, 2021, to investigate and prosecute domestic and international actors involved in such fraudulent schemes. This task force plays a crucial role in identifying and addressing criminal acts that exploit federal programs aimed at assisting individuals and businesses during the pandemic.

Reports indicate that the pandemic relief programs, designed to provide financial support to struggling businesses, have been rife with fraud. Fraudsters have taken advantage of the urgency and scale of these programs, intended to offer financial relief and sustain the economy during significant disruptions. Various methods have been employed by these individuals to conceal their wrongdoing, showcasing the need for robust enforcement measures.

Public Resources for Reporting Fraud

This crackdown on fraud is vital for ensuring that assistance reaches those in genuine need and for maintaining the integrity of federal relief efforts. The case against Akande, Henderson, and Rollizo underscores the prosecution’s commitment to holding accountable those who attempt to exploit the system at the expense of others.
