Early Life and Education
Wyck was born in Augusta, Georgia, to Wyckliffe Austin Knox and Byrnece Purcell Knox. He grew up in Thomson, Georgia, where he received his education in public schools. After graduating from Thomson High School in 1958, he distinguished himself as a member of the Beta Club and Debate Team, served as Editor of the yearbook, achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, and played Varsity Football, earning Honorable Mention in the All State selections.
He went on to pursue higher education at the University of Georgia (UGA), earning a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance in 1962, followed by a law degree in 1964. During his time at UGA, Wyck was actively involved in various organizations, including the Debate Team, Kappa Alpha Order, and served as President of both the Interfraternity Council and Gridiron Secret Society.
Legal Career
Wyck began his legal career at Hull, Towill & Norman in Augusta after graduating from UGA. In 1976, he co-founded Knox & Zacks, where he practiced law and served clients in the region. Concurrently, he became chair of the board and CEO of Knox Rivers Construction Company, a family-operated business based in Thomson, which he managed for over 19 years until its sale in 1995.
In 1994, Knox & Zacks merged with Kilpatrick & Cody, a move that greatly increased the firm’s resources and capabilities. Wyck was part of the executive committee of Kilpatrick Stockton from 1998 to 2001, where he continued to address legal challenges and manage firm strategy.
Community Involvement
Wyck was known for his dedication to community service, taking on numerous philanthropic roles and leadership positions. In 1992, he was appointed by Governor Zell Miller to be a founding director of the Georgia Lottery Corporation, where he later served as chairman for eight years. Between 1992 and 1996, he was also a member of the Metropolitan Atlanta Olympic Games Authority and was responsible for overseeing the construction of the Olympic Stadium.
His influence extended to several boards, including the Georgia Railroad Bank, Young Harris College, and various public companies. Wyck also became involved with MD Anderson in 2012 and served as a Board of Visitors member until his passing.
Wyck’s extensive community service included impactful roles in the Augusta Bar Association, Rotary Club, Georgia-Carolina Council of the Boy Scouts of America, and the University Health Care Foundation. His contributions were recognized with the Robert L. Allgood Service Award in 2012, and he was inducted into the CSRA Business Hall of Fame in 2013.
Family and Legacy
Wyck is survived by his wife of 58 years, Shell Hardman Knox, their four children, twelve grandchildren, and many extended family members. He was preceded in death by his sister, Harriet “Hatsy” Knox Fleming. A memorial service is scheduled for August 19, 2025, at Sacred Heart Cultural Center in Augusta. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes contributions to the Wyckliffe Austin Knox, Jr. Memorial Fund or St. John United Methodist Church.
