North Augusta, SC – Dr. Ralph William Buchanan, Sr. passed away peacefully at his home on August 10, 2025, at the age of 79, surrounded by his family. His contributions to the medical field and his commitment to his community have left a lasting legacy that will be remembered by many.
The funeral services for Dr. Buchanan will commence with the Rosary being recited on Friday evening, August 15th, at 5 o’clock at Posey Funeral Home, followed by visitation until 7 o’clock. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held the following morning, Saturday, August 16th, at 11 o’clock at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, with interment to take place at the church columbarium post-service. After interment, a reception for guests will be hosted at the Camellia Room at Lookaway Inn.
Dr. Buchanan was born on March 31, 1946, in Jersey City, NJ, to the late Ralph Waldo Buchanan and Jennie Blackadder Buchanan. Raised in West Palm Beach, FL, he graduated from Cardinal Newman High School and continued his education at Spring Hill College in Mobile, AL, where he met his future wife, Geine. The couple celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary prior to his passing. After obtaining his degree, Dr. Buchanan worked at the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta before pursuing a doctorate at the Medical College of Georgia. His medical training was completed with a residency in Pensacola, FL.
Dr. Buchanan settled in North Augusta, SC, where he dedicated over 30 years to Family Medicine, primarily serving as a physician in the emergency room at Doctors Hospital before retiring from his practice. His patients and colleagues admired him for his professionalism and dedication to the health and well-being of his community.
A devout Catholic and passionate advocate for the pro-life movement, Dr. Buchanan was an active member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church and The Knights of Columbus. He was well-known within his parish for his generosity and commitment to supporting the sanctity of life.
Family was paramount in Dr. Buchanan’s life. He is survived by his wife, Geine; two daughters, Michele Metts and Laurie Jimenez; and numerous grandchildren, including Christopher, William, Erin, Bridget, Maggie, Daniel, and Caroline, along with two great-grandchildren, Scottie and Charlie. He was preceded in death by his son, Dr. Ralph W. Buchanan, Jr., and his sister, Lee Buchanan.
Outside of his professional career, Dr. Buchanan was renowned for his keen sense of humor and was an avid history buff. His hobbies included photography and golf, and he was a lifelong fan of baseball. Initially an admirer of Mickey Mantle and the New York Yankees, he later became a dedicated follower of the Atlanta Braves.
Dr. Buchanan’s contributions to healthcare and the community will be honored through memorial donations to the Augusta Care Pregnancy Center. Arrangements are being handled by Posey Funeral Directors of North Augusta, assisting the family during this time of loss.
As friends and family gather to pay their respects, Dr. Buchanan will be remembered not only as a dedicated physician but also as a loving husband, father, and grandparent whose impact on those around him will not be forgotten.
